A roomful of academics erupted in angry boos Tuesday morning after political analyst Michael Barone said journalists trashed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republicans' vice presidential nominee, because "she did not abort her Down syndrome baby."
Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and ... went over the line."
Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, which calls itself the nations oldest higher-education association.
The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby," Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. "They wanted her to kill that child. ... I'm talking about my media colleagues with whom I've worked for 35 years.
Barone, a popular speaker on the paid lecture circuit, is a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and principal coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics."
About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.
Barone did not dispute the accounts of his remarks. Asked about the comments, Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line."
"Sorry for that," Barone said. "I was trying to focus on press hostility to Palin. I agree with [Washington Post media reporter and CNN 'Reliable Sources' host] Howard Kurtz that the press was much more interested in tracking down negative information on Palin than Obama."
Palins youngest child, her son Trig, was born in April. Televised shots of him during her convention speech helped endear her to conservatives. During the campaign, she said she would use the vice presidency to help families with special-needs children.

Abortion is the first and foremost sacrament of liberalism.
As usual, the truth is not a popular position (especially with the left).
I think the liberal media wanted McCain to abort...
I would have made the same remarks from the podium, then walked out on the audience.
The left will never be able to accept raw truth — or any truth for that matter.
Did someone manage to get a picture of them for later identification?
They'll just get bolder now that they've got Obama in office, and they'll start hurting people ~ most likely starting out by beating elderly nuns to death on the public sidewalks outside abortuaries.
This can be stopped now.
And he botched his campaign anyway. No worries, Sarah will be back in 2012 to secure our borders and restore our gun rights and cancel the upcoming 'Fairness Doctrine'.
Liberals hate light.
He wasn’t trying to be humorous, he was telling the truth.
He spoke the truth.
Feminists hate her because she repudiates their own lives, solely by existing.
Abortion is the work of the Devil, and the liberal left are his disciples.
It seems to embolden demons, too. I can see how bringing such things to light would be unpalatable for those whom demons affect the most.
I think he obliged.
Word. In the Liberal world view, abortion is protected by the 1st amendment since the government should not interfere with the practice of religion. Which brings me to another point, all those pro-Obama pastors who plan on jumping down the aisles when Obama is inaugurated, they'll have a lot of explaining to do on Judgment Day when they see the millions who were killed by the stroke of Obama's evil pro-abortion pen.
The shoe fits
The vituperation ought to be ending soon. The campaign is over.
So only conservatives love babies????
What Barone said was no joke. It was the “God’s honest truth.”
I geuss the truth hurts. As far as liberals are concerned 90% of down syndrome babies are aborted and they would probably say God damn sarah palin for not making it 91%.
Yeah, I can’t imagine Barone telling a joke.
