Barack Obama promised he would lower taxes for 95 percent of Americans and presumably raise them for the 5 percent who benefited most under President Bushs tax policies. But, remarkably, the most affluent 5 percent supported Obama and that was perhaps the key to his victory last week.
This group and the rise of a new elite class of voters is at the heart of the fast-paced changes in demographics affecting the political, sociological and economic landscape of the country. While there has been some inflation over the past 12 years, the exit poll demographics show that the fastest growing group of voters in America has been those making over $100,000 a year in income. In 1996, only 9 percent of the electorate said their family income was that high. Last week it had grown to 26 percent more than one in four voters. And those making over $75,000 are up to 15 percent from 9 percent. Put another way, more than 40 percent of those voting earned over $75,000, making this the highest-income electorate in history.
The poorest segment of the electorate, those making under $15,000, has shrunk from 11 percent to 6 percent over the past dozen years. And those making $15,000 to $30,000 annually the working poor also shrunk from 23 percent to 12 percent of the electorate.
At the same time, the voters have become more racially diverse (with white voters dropping 9 points from 1996 to 74 percent of the electorate and minorities) and better educated voters who had attended some college are surging.

ping
I guess these blue bloods feel that teh Obama’s plans will not impact them. Boy, are these pin heads in for a treat!
and we’re the party of the rich? heh...
This reminds me of that old Lenin quote about capitalists being willing to sell the rope by which they would be hanged, or something to that effect.
Wait a minute. I through the rich was getting richer and the poor was getting poorer?
They won’t be affluent for long, if BHO fulfills his promises.
Affluent now...wait 4 years.
I also think the voting age should be 21 (unless serving in the military)
some of them, especially the hollywood types, have so much money (made from such meaningless work) that they can afford to maintain their lifestyle even with high taxes.
The value of the dollar has dropped steadily over the years, so it’s not clear to me that a larger number of people making over $100K means than much.
Yep, it’s just us po’ ol uneducated racist hicks that voted for McCain.
All 56 million of us.
Bush's Fault
Of course. An oligarchy is never personally affected by a government’s redistributionist policies or cultural mandates.
The truly rich will be able to protect their wealth,
and they will be able to maintain their lifestyle.
Their pride also demands that others NOT be able to approach anything near their lifestyle,
and they know that socialist policies guarantee that gap.
I think the voting age should be 30.
The affluent joining the effluent?
My husband has very wealthy family members that are small business owners. They have such a severe case of Bush Derangement Syndrome that even though they knew Obama’s policies would hurt them they voted for him anyway. Pathetic!
@$$h0les
these are the same kind of wealthy (Cuban) idiots who funded Castro in 58-59 and wound up losing everything.
I hope they get plucked first......
