One of the consistent tactics of the post-modern transnational utopian left is to co-opt the national inheritance to undermine that inheritance. On this 90th anniversary of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, Jennifer Lynch, Queen's Counsel, the hack bureaucrat who presides over my tormentors at the Canadian Human Rights Commission, decided to gatecrash the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa. Or as she puts it:
"This year, for the first time, the Canadian Human Rights Commission has the honour of laying a wreath at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony. The wreath will be placed by Chief Commissioner Jennifer Lynch, Q.C, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights."
Well, fine. If you want to commemorate the 60th anniversary of that, why don't you push off and organize your own ceremony? But that's not what Remembrance Day is about - in Ottawa, London or even in the tiny colonial backwater of Grand Turk (where I was yesterday, as the locals made their preparations). November 11th is a day to honor the sacrifice of soldiers of the Queen who fought for their country in brutal bloody wars Commissioner Lynch's self-serving press release can't even be bothered to mention, as Ezra Levant notes:
"This is one of the signature techniques of the left: The co-option of historical memory. You still have the same outward dress the cenotaph, the dignitaries, the poppies, the old stooped veterans but the meaning of the event is hijacked and inverted. The contamination of Remembrance Day by this ghastly woman is disgusting even by her standards."
By the way, Canada's pseudo-"human rights" bureaucracies are in sustained systemic breach of key aspects of the UN Declaration, including the right to the presumption of innocence and the right to due process. Having been on the receiving end of Commissioner Lynch's "human rights" for the best part of a year, I regard her as, at best, an ahistorical nitwit unfit for public office. But, if she's so eager to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the UN declaration, why doesn't she get her own thug bureaucracy to comply with it?
But does she want to commemorate Canada's war dead and their sacrifice to keep Canada free? Of course not. And a ceremony intended for fallen soldiers becomes an occasion to praise the UN.
Despicable.
And this smacks closely of Obama supporting seeking to co-opt Lincoln’s birthday to honor Obama, does it not?
supporting = supporters
*Canada Ping* :)
Without the Vets, there are no “Human Rights”.
Canada sucks.
Question: Does it bother anybody else that Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day now include more and more references to “first responders”? Understand me and put away the flamethrowers: these are BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN, but they’re not military members (unless by coincidence they actually served). To a lesser extent than this Canadian woman, this co-opts the reason for the day: veterans and war casualties. Just wonderin’...
Colonel, USAFR
The top allied ace of WWI was a small-town Canadian — and now its come to this.
Talk about dishonoring the dead and their sacrifice.
This woman fits into the same category as Fred Phelps and family, disrupting funerals to show how much they hate and damn America.
Properly, it is the organizers of this event who should be confronted, as to why they permitted this distasteful effort at usurpation. Certainly, to insure that she is never invited back.
Yes, and speaking of leftwing co-opt, have we all noticed that we are now entering the “Holiday” season and not the “Christmas” season?
Perhaps you are entering the holiday season. In my household we are entering the Christmas season. The libs and media do not dictate my world view or how I celebrate holidays.
No it does not. It's government critters are full of it, but the country itself is beautiful. It gets cold as hell but it definitely does not "suck". Any country that produces Labatts Blue beer cannot be all bad. Their whiskey is not bad either. And I love those Mountie uniforms.
Commendable. But that wasn't my point. My point was that the Left (by and through marketing venues) has speciously co-opted the sacred holiday of Christmas. It's now promoted as a generic secular mush known as "The Holidays." The way you happen to celebrate holidays doesn't change that fact.
But I stand beside you in your opposition to it.
Merry Christmas!
What I find worse is the pervasive effort in schools to make Nov 11 into a day celebrating pacifism.

I learn from Stephen Taylor that Rob Nicholson, the Justice Minister, voted “yes” on P-203.
This is incredible. The Justice Minister voted to repeal section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act — a section that his department’s lawyers (and the Canadian Human Rights Commission) are enforcing as we speak.
Yesterday, I said that the impact of the party’s vote would be salutary, in that party activists would telegraph their intentions to MPs. Who knew that one of those activists would have been the minister himself! I would think that, as a matter of protocol, his office should start preparing legislation to match his publicly stated intentions, and all s. 13 cases should be stayed.
Another cabinet minister e-mailed to tell me that, after P-203 passed, there was a spontaneous standing ovation in the hall. Again, amazing. How often does that sort of enthusiastic unity greet any policy idea?
I haven't been following this because I found it far too depressing. The 'thought' of 'those people' laying a wreath at the Cenotaph was too painful.
Thanks mc5cents.
