U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's historic victory does not bode well for comedians who have thrived on jokes about President George W. Bush, experts say.
Obama, who was backed by many Hollywood figures, will be inaugurated on January 20 as the United States' first black president against a backdrop of a global financial crisis and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Whether because he was the favorite of left-leaning comics, the historic nature of his election or that so far he has made few gaffes, comedians are finding little to joke about so far.

Oh I’m sure they’ll find a way to work in Obama. He’s kind of boring and well-spoken though. Watch when he starts to mess up though - people like to believe that the media and these comedians are all vehement liberals, but Bill Maher said it himself on his last show - when Obama mucks (not the word he uses, but it rhymes) up the economy, starts a unilateral war, and tries to get his babysitter placed on the supreme court, then maybe things will turn around. Bush gave them a lot of food to deal with. As some posters have noted, however, Joe Biden looks ready to take GW’s place.
...Can you say “that s word”? Sh-t!!!
Bill Maher’s show on HBO will have to be canceled. The ONE will never make a mistake, so what could they talk about?
They will just go after any Republican who dares question Obama. Believe me, they aren’t going anywhere.
"The president is black, so obviously we're going to make fun of every situation you could ever imagine about a black president," he told The New York Times.
Gee. I wonder how much of their material will involve "Uh"bama sticking it to whitey?
sorry this tax payer is all out of giggles. no bail out for you!
If I know these guys, they’ll just keep making fun of Bush for the next twenty years. They’ll be too stupid to know when he’s gone.
This reminds me of the beginning of the Carter administration. Comics didn’t know how to deal with him because he was perceived as such a genius/saint. Watch SNL’s take on Carter in early 1977:
“Maybe they can tell jokes about Emmanuel Goldstein. “
Nice.
Obama has no sense of humour or humility about himself; otherwise, he would not be encouraging this cult of personality his followers have built around him.
The Messiah will not, nay, cannot, be mocked. Such would be blasphemy.
That is why the comedians will be silent about Obama, because many of them are his votaries.
So am I...
And so it will be for the next 50 years.
actually the comedians could have a field day with the messiah references and that he will “rule” from day one like a dictator......they just don’t like making fun of their own beliefs, their own man - that’s their real problem.
My theory is, that's why you keep hearing about Sarah Palin in the news. The lefty comedians know they cannot make fun of "The One", so they're keeping her around for that purpose.
Everyone knows that even comedians must gently treat Hussein with ‘kid gloves’, and any humor MUST be in good taste and done in a ‘good-spirited’ manner. To do otherwise (as we found out in the campaign), is completely unthinkable, and the perpetrator must realize that there ARE CONSEQUENCES to be paid for what they say and do. It’s as simple as that.
What is Hollywierd to do when they can’t create a movie script or tv show to ridicule the current president? Ooh...maybe they’ll go under too. Oh! There’s that wishful thinking again.
They have one thing right: There is nothing funny about Obama as President.
