Honoring our veterans by supporting The Fisher House program
The Collins Report ^ | Nov. 11, 2008 | Kevin “Coach” Collins

We conservatives have learned that we can’t rely on anyone but ourselves, and we’ll have to recapture America from the ground up. Our “to do” list is long, but some things are more important than others.

Supporting the Fisher House program is one of these things.

Fisher House is a totally privately funded effort to support our recovering wounded warriors by helping their loved ones when they are most in need. When a wounded warrior is recovering state-side, most often the hospital or rehabilitation facility is hundreds of miles from those who dearly wish to visit and give their love and comfort to their warrior.

Most families can’t afford the costs of lodging while they visit. This is where Fisher House comes in to help. Fisher Houses are a series of what they call “comfort homes” built on the grounds of military hospitals that serve the needs of families and friends in these terrible situations. They make it possible for them to be nearby at crucial points in the sometimes very long road to recovery.

Since the program was started in 1990 more than 10,000 families have spent nearly 2.5 million days living safely and comfortably near their wound warriors, healing their emotional wounds as their bodies heal physically. There is never a charge to stay at a Fisher House, and that won’t change. Nevertheless, keeping this uniquely grassroots self help program going costs money. This is where we come in.

No one told Fisher House to take on this enormously vital task, they did it because they are Americans acting as Americans should. They saw a need and started filling it without waiting for government to step in and make another mess.

Let’s make everyday Veterans Day by supporting Fisher House. Please join me in donating at

These are awesome places! My brother’s wife and kids were able to stay in one while he was recovering from his Iraq wounds in San Antonio.

The homes are beautiful and the Troops families get to stay there for free. It’s donor supported so please consider donating. There are several around the country. They make life easier on those Troops who are wounded and the family who can remain close by without finding a hotel off the base and paying money they don’t have!

Last year after learning about what Fisher House does, I set up half of my employee charitable donations pulled from each paycheck to go to Fisher House. The other half to our local Boy Scouts. Going to try to encourage others in my office to do the same.
