A Democrat is poised to take the reins of power in Washington, D.C., and Fresno resident Jim Robinson is feeling a sense of déjà vu.
It was President Clinton's 1992 election that sparked Robinson's political activism, driving him to create a Web site that made him a grass-roots leader among conservatives before Clinton's term was over.
This year, as Barack Obama prepares to sweep into office on another tide of Democratic votes, Robinson and denizens of that Web site, freerepublic.com, are preparing to do battle again. "We'll double and redouble our efforts to fight for what is right," Robinson says. "We've got people just spitting nails."
Free Republic, founded by Robinson in September 1996, doesn't attract much attention from the national press and is not well-known among political experts. Many of its postings have a decidedly fringe feel.
But long before Red State, Daily Kos and Little Green Footballs arrived on the Internet political scene, Free Republic was building an audience -- and becoming a formidable political force among conservatives and libertarians that is admired even by some who disagree with its political philosophy.
In a study last month by the Internet ratings firm comScore, Free Republic ranked fifth among political blogs, just behind heavyweights The Huffington Post, Politico, Drudge Report and Real Clear Politics.
The Huffington Post had more than 4.5 million "unique visitors" -- those who visit a Web site more than once during a specified period -- during the election season, according to comScore. Politico, Drudge Report and Real Clear Politics all had more than 1.1 million unique visitors. Free Republic was fifth with 987,000 unique visitors, according to comScore.
Robinson said Free Republic has more than 300,000 registered users, though not all are active on the site, and its normal 1 million daily page views grew...

Well, darn. Sorry I wasn't able to be there, Chads. We miss you at our corner. I'd have brought brownies had I known you were going to be there. :-(
We had a photographer from the Bee there Friday night. He took several pictures. Jim said he had talked to the reporter before and after the election. They wanted a current picture, so Jim told him they could find him at Shaw and Blackstone on Friday night.
Chadsworth came by. He asked about you and JK. He is planning to attend our December rally. Hope you will be able to make it.
The Fresno Been and the rest of the MSM obviously don't understand the basic concepts of capitalism and supply side economics. The Fresno Bee could be one of the few thriving newspapers in this country, if only they veered to the right.
Dugg!
A great Digg about Jim Robinson at post #53.
Ping!
We will sure try to be there, barring fog, which is always a problem this time of year. It will be great to see you again, chads.
FReepmail me to be added to the digg ping list!
I dugg it!
BTTT
Thanks for the ping, LucyT
I've never heard anyone say that here.
There are crackpots in any large group. You can't control what everyone posts. I have seen posts and threads about Obama pulled that are blatantly racist.
Some posts are "fringe". Most are not. That's kinda what "fringe" means.
To hightlight the "fringe" and the stuff FR doesn't condone is unfair and biased.
Sheila brought the paper to me this morning. This article is on the front page below the fold! It’s not exactly the Rolling Stone, but I got my picture on the cover of the Fresno Bee!! Woo hoooo!! LOL
Seriously, I am glad to see the spotlight on you and FR and I am proud to be a 10 year member of this website.

You've sure been a friend and a God-send to us "Freepers" for all these years. Thanks you for all you are doing for us.
You are ever in my prayers.
ping!
Denizen of that web site, reporting for duty!!!
