OPINION: Remember sacrifices veterans made

The Armistice signing that ended World War I, the "Great War" and the "War to End All Wars," was signed on Nov. 18, 1918, at 11 a.m.

Thereafter, Armistice Day was celebrated on that date and officially designated a federal holiday in 1938.

After World War II, it became known as Veterans Day and in 1977 officially became celebrated on Nov. 11.

Throughout our history, Americans have kept a special place of honor in their hearts for our veterans. And for more than 70 years, Nov. 11 has been set aside to recognize the men and women who have so courageously served their country.

I take the time to remember all veterans.. I remember my father who served in WWII and Korea.. I think of all the fine veterans I have met and worked with in the VFW and the American Legion.

I also take time to remember all my friends who are still in the military now.. I wonder what about six of my real good friends who are now deployed in both Iraq and Afghanistan at this very moment.

Its time to remember those who served and those who are serving today.

I honor all Veterans past and present. I adore my brother who was wounded in Iraq and barely made it out alive. I lost a dear friend in Iraq on his second tour.

I have lost Veterans in my family in every war back to the Revolutionary war, Civil War, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

My family knows the price of sacrifice for America and I honor them all with every breath in my body!

Rest in Peace Jon Menke and Gary Henry. You served your country well and with honor. They died 8/04/08 when an ied exploded and destroyed their vehicle. To John B, injured in the explosion, keeping fighting to get better.

These soldiers were in my son's Army Nat’l Guard company, which is still in Iraq training Iraq Policemen. They were all wounded on that day, yet they still serve with dignity and do the Army proud!

My heroes all. They are getting a big box of cookies and brownies sent out today.

As far as the original post, I don’t believe Nov 18th was ever part of the armistice.
