When I was in the union, it was a law that members were allowed to retrieve the percentage of their union dues every year that went for 'political purposes'. I forgot the amount but it resulted in about a $35 check many years ago. The 'window' to submit your request was small and they made it difficult. Had to be certified mail. I was the one who went around this institution to everyone I found (there were over 1,000 employees in those days) with my own page of instructions ....that I handed out to everyone....telling them how to fill out the form, what tdates it had to be mailed --certified-- and what information must be included.
Some union exec's gave my boss a hard time about me pushing the issue. They really made it tough but I didn't give in. It was a legal refund that hardly anyone knew about. I remember emailing this information to Rush back when he first got his Compuserve email.
I believe it's still a law....but it is hidden in a very small article every year in the union newspapers. I was in the AFL-CIO.

My Operating Engineers pension: I was getting ~$1300 a month (pretax) but since I started working again in Alaska I had to stop it (even though I am in a different union).

I won’t be vested in the Teamsters until 5 years from now and I don’t think I will be getting that because I don’t anticipate my job being here that long (especially now that Obama was elected). The ~$600 a month I put into that pension (plus dues) is something I will never see as I’ll never get vested. I wish I could just put that cash into a mutual fund somewhere.

The OE pension is/was nice but I won’t be able to live on it when I leave this job and get it reinstated (although I have a military pension which will allow some relief). Plus, since I gave up my pension to work here, I’m not sure if it will be as much when it’s re-instated since the stock market crash.

Of course I’m looking forward to my pension...it cost me enough. ;-)

It’s still there, but you need 3 lawyers and 100pounds of legal paperwork to get the UNION to ADMIT it.
They are, by my unions, anyway, are called:

DUES Paying NON MEMBERS! .. and the NON Union Extras are treated better than DPNM’s

Wow...that is alot. I was in a tier where I paid 'nothing' into the system. I was in the last tier where that benefit was offered. After that tier, they had started deducting.
Since it's NY state pension, I think I am pretty safe in seeing it - since I think there would be literally millions of people affected....that would be some war.....
I won't be able to 'live' on my pension either.....but it's a very nice added security.

It was also a LAW that they had to advertise that refund with instructions at least ONCE in the union paper. They always hide it....
