Guess who is conveniently leaving tomorrow on a Caribbean cruise with influential conservative leaders now that the election is over and Republicans are pondering their future?
Yep, Mitt Romney, widely believed to be planning another run for president in 2012.
Mr. Romney, who sought the Republican nomination in 2008, is one of the headliners for the National Reviews post-election cruise, which departs tomorrow for six days of sun and conversation about restoring the Republican brand in fabulous ports of call in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Turks and Caicos.
It is the same annual confab that fortuitously visited Alaska last year, stopping off to meet Gov. Sarah Palin, and, thereby, helping to send her on a trajectory, according to a recent New Yorker article, to be plucked from relative obscurity to become Senator John McCains running mate.
Conservative elites from that cruise, along with one organized by the Weekly Standard that also visited Alaska, came away enamored by Ms. Palin, who worked hard to court them, the article said.
Ms. Palin, of course, is back in Alaska and does not have a ticket to this years get-together. Mr. Romney will share the stage with Fred D. Thompson and other guest speakers.
For a taste of the goings-on aboard ship, here is a description from the Web site: This is not your typical cruise. Guests of National Review will enjoy informative seminars and extensive interaction with our guest speakers; numerous social events; dining with fellow conservatives as well as guest speakers; and a wonderful sense of sharing and camaraderie.

I don’t think you need to preface your comment with “I respectfully disagree.” These Mitt bashers are so full of irrational hate for the man.
Mitt was the only one who tirelessly campaigned for McCain after McCain screwed him over in Florida with his underhanded claim that Mitt was for a Withdrawal Timetable when he was, in fact, not. That was the turning point for Mitt.
In spite of that, Mitt graciously bowed out at the right time (good for the party to have unity) and threw his support in for McCain. Recall self-centered Huckster kept in the race long after he was welcome.
Mitt is good to have on our side folks. He’s not an inarticulate cornball like McCain. He can out-debate Obasma.
I've the feeling you intended it to come across differently.
But:
That being said,
If McCain was today's Bob Dole, how else might you consider Mitt Romney in 2012?
Mitt has four years to demonstrate by his word and actions that he is a true conservative. Given his record he has to prove himself. To date he has not done so. I will therefore wait and see and work for others first.
Still on the payroll, I see.
Baloney. His word and his character are worthless. His record is Socialism and backstabbing Conservatives, Conservatism, and the Republican party. He’s the best Governor the DEMOCRAT party ever had in Massachusetts. He removed completely their opposition party from being competitive again for years to come.
That’s the Slick Willard record, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Apparently not completely unwelcome, since Mike beat McCain in a bunch of states after Mitt pulled out.
Because you already have and that will be ineffective lies next time around. Sarah Palin will be untouchable by your Obama bots.

You must not have read the article..
... actually it was a MITT former aide who went to work for McCain that dissed Sarah Palin!
Get the word out. Mitt was behind all that ugly sick gossip against Pailn.
It looked to me that Fred entered only to take away Mitts thunder, remember Fred is a McCain friend and was backing him when he dropped out.
I would no more vote for Mitt Romney than I would for 0bama.
Mormons aren’t Christian, they are a Cult. End of story.
I don’t care that they backed and paid for Prop 8 out here.
It was probably a campaign to get people to forget their polygamy; their whole cult was built on NOT having the sanctity of marriage.
Even were that his sole motivation (it wasn't), God bless him for stopping that sleazy, flipflopping, backstabbing, party-killing, Socialist abomination.
Exactly. That’s exactly what I mean. She’d never pick him so I’d never have to vote for him.
sigh, we rejected him. he was a better candidate than mcshame, but not by much. down with the RINOS NO RINOS IN thE PRIMARIES!
No thanks, Mitt. We are tired of losing elections due to Northeast RINO’s
The fat cat RINO’s have been choosing the party candidate far to long and you can see they have chosen candidates barely distinguishable from the Progressives.
Many of you made really dumb statements saying that you wanted McCain to lose so citizens could get a taste of liberalism run amok.
Well I heard many of those same words when I visited Venezuela about a man named Hugo Chavez.
He to was only supposed to serve 4 years but by damn he is on 11 as this is written.
The vicious Democrats are a fixin to show those mean old Republicans just how to play the Gotcha game and it ain't a gonna be much fun for the next 4 and maybe 8 years.
I'm betting that these so-called "influential conservative leaders" aren't so influential, aren't truly conservative, and certainly aren't leaders.
I feel the same way actually. What I don't like about Fred is that he has a reputation for appearing lazy and he really didn't do anything to convince anybody otherwise.
