Mitt Romney: I’m no back stabber

Aides blast accusations, not from Mitt camp

By Dave Wedge

Saturday, November 8, 2008 -

Mitt Romney’s camp is firing back at reports his foot soldiers are behind a brutal smear campaign against Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in a backdoor strategy to position the former Bay State governor for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

“It’s a completely absurd allegation that is totally divorced from the truth,” Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said.

Fox News, the New York Times [NYT] and Newsweek have reported on a host of criticisms of Palin, including that she threw tantrums that made staffers cry and didn’t know Africa was a continent. Several media outlets reported some of the leaks came from within the McCain campaign. But the political blog, The Palmetto Scoop, citing “very good sources,” said it was Romney loyalists working for McCain who were behind the “premeditated last minute sabotage” of Palin.

Fehrnstrom took issue with the Scoop’s claim that as much as 80 percent of Romney’s campaign staff went to work for Sen. John McCain’s team after the GOP primary. Only “a handful” of Romney operatives joined the Arizona senator’s campaign, he said.

“The truth is, there are no former Romney staffers in senior roles at the McCain campaign,” Fehrnstrom said. “I can think of a handful of people, maybe three or four, who went over, all in junior positions.”

However, Romney’s former campaign spokesman Kevin Madden was among the ex-Romney staffers to bash Palin. In an interview on CNN just a week before the election, Madden called Palin “unseasoned” and questioned whether she should have been McCain’s pick.

“When you put out an unknown and you give them 70 days with which to go through a vetting process, both by voters and the national press corps, ugly things can tend to happen,” Madden said.

Since McCain’s loss, Palin has been accused of dragging down the ticket in what her spokeswoman Meg Stapleton reportedly called “a circling firing squad.”

GOP strategist Holly Robichaud, who writes the “Lone Republican” blog for the Herald, said: “It’s definitely Romney’s people. They’ve been doing it for a while. Romney is thinking about running again in 2012 and he needs to kill off Sarah Palin in order to get there.”

Romney himself has defended Palin, calling her a “positive addition to the ticket” in an appearance on CBS’ “Early Show” a week before the election.

“For a first-time candidate on the national stage . . . you’re subject to the national spotlight. It’s more like a national torch,” Romney said. “She has been able to keep cool under the pressure.”

Meanwhile, a new Rasmussen poll shows that 64 percent of Republicans want Palin to be the GOP presidential candidate in 2012 while 11 percent prefer Romney.

Few?
Um, ok....
That explains all that support he had here during the primaries LOL.
There is one Mitt basher out there, real nut case I guess from your perspective. Goes by Jim Rob or something, I see his name all over the place around here for some reason...

I never called anyone a "nutcase in my perspective". If Jim Rob does not approve of Romney, that is fine. He's welcome to his opinion, and I TOTALLY respect him for everything he's done "all over the place around here".

However, others can make their own minds up. I made mine for myself. I think Jim Rob would probably respect that kind of mind set.

IMO, Romney brought a lot to the table. There are other choices out there now, as well. Blaming Romeny for this attack on Governor Palin is not helpful for planning for the future. The in-fighting in the Republican party might be fun for some, but it's not helpful in planning for the future.

Romney is a liberal to the LEFT of Ted Kennedy.
The vicious, child-backstabbing, bastard said so, himself.

My final comment on this thread before going out to dinner...
ECONOMY WAS #1 issue on voter's minds in 2008 election per exit polls. McCain's gaffe saying "Economy is strong", "I don't know much about economy" and "I voted 90% with Bush" was exploited cleverly by Obama.
Romney was the right candidate in 2008 based on economic situation. Obama could not lump Romney with Bush on any votes rendered. But 2012 is eons away, we don't know how things will look then. Let us not get into infighting so early. Romney may not even be around in 2012.

If by Romney Haters you mean conservatives who never bought his 11 hour conversion and judged him not on his web sites and words but by 20 some years of political actions, then yes you are somewhat correct. He also came a cross a bit disingenuous as well, which explained his up and down support.

None of which proves that Mitt Romney had a thing to do with the attacks on Sarah Palin, I don’t mind the rough stuff, as long as it is directed at Dhimmicrats.

Until evidence, actual evidence emerges, we are merely hurting our common cause.

no, but doesn’t Soros understand the economy? He’s even more successful than Romney!
The point is that just because someone understands microeconomics doesn’t mean he has a clue about macroeconomics.
Romney is a corporatist keynesian. He does not believe in limited govt. That’s the major problem. He supported the bailout, stimulus rebate checks, against a flat tax, supports all kinds of corporate welfare and supported Commonwealth Care. Basically just another W Bush who cut taxes but blew up the deficit and govt spending.

None of the networks are any ones "friend". They have an agenda that meets up with the left...they just placate to the right masses to bring them in line. You are not talking to a rube.

If Romney stops this crap and teams up with Palin he will be unstoppable, instead he and all the rest keep following along with their agenda to do "what is best" for the sheep. I reject the notion that people need to be completely controlled.

Wrong. Myth Romney is an abcess, full of pus, infecting others, and the abcess must be exposed to light.

Yep. But it's just instinctual, when the media tells them, for Republicans to form a circle and open fire inwards.

It's rather funny, if you think about it--before the internet, conservatives would laugh about being called "reactionaries." Then we went through a short period where the internet allowed us to prove the other side is reactionary. Now the internet is allowing the other side to prove that we are reactionaries, after all.

Because of saboteur Romney and his knee-padded minions,
Obama is President Elect.

If Romney interferes again, it will only be
to give Obama 8 years of reign.

The common good would be helped by Romney going away.
Far, far, away.

Pray tell, madam, what did Slick Willard bring to the table ? As one who has watched him closely for 14 years, who was there for his campaign for Senator, what is it you see that the rest of us don’t ?

"As a result of our discussions and other interactions with gay and lesbian voters across the state, I am more convinced than ever that as we seek to establish full equality for America's gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent,'' Romney wrote, referring to US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

"If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will,'' Romney wrote..

In an interview with Bay Windows the same year, Romney made a similar political argument: “I think the gay community needs more support from the Republican Party and I would be a voice in the Republican Party to foster anti-discrimination efforts.'' .

In the interview, Romney was quoted saying that when Kennedy speaks on gay rights, he's viewed as a liberal "extremist." But Romney said when he speaks about gay rights he's seen as "a centrist and a moderate.".

Romney was endorsed by the Log Cabin Republicans in his 2002 race for governor. But the group declined to endorse his would-be successor, Kerry Healey, this year, complaining that he had used his office to rally against gay marriage..

Since at least as far back as 2004, Romney has spoken out repeatedly for a federal amendment to ban gay marriage. But he occassionally has softened his tone, as he did before a Michigan audience in 2005..

''Americans respect all people. We also recognize that there are many settings where children are raised," Romney said in Livonia, Mich., citing grandparents and same-sex couples as examples. ''But we choose to recognize one setting as the ideal." .

Among bloggers, Kathleen Lopez downplays the recent Romney disclosures. Andrew Sullivan asks "Was he lying then or is he lying now? What does he really believe?'' On AmericaBlog, a poster says: "This almost as fun as Mary Cheney pregnant.'' And Town Hall's Dean Barnett offers a bit of explanation here.

One week we love the FNC; the next the FNC is the enemy.

They keep changing to mollify BOR, the offended.

Watch Greta's numbers Monday to see which way the wind blows.

They have been creeping left so long they have finally got there.
