Many reasons for the loss.
First the REP Party let the DEMS choose who we got. (Close ALL Primaries to REP ONLY).
Second: Bush didn't use the Bully Pulpit to defend himself. He should have been speaking daily informing the public. He choose to remain silent.
Third: We had a looser canidate who had no clue how to debate or to answer questions.
For those of you that think he was some kind of a hero!
PLEASE. Yes, he served our country. Many of US served. Getting captured does not make you a hero. Please visit Vietnam Vets against John McCain. Then tell me he is a hero. Read everything.

Yes, and the media was able to make everything became a Bush- IE: Republican- problem.

McCain probably told him to stay well out of the election, but he shouldn't have just laid down. It didn't help him or McCain.
