WASHINGTON: It popped out casually, a throwaway line as Barack Obama talked to reporters about finding the right puppy for his young daughters.
But with just three offhand words in his first news conference as president-elect, Obama reminded everyone how thoroughly different his administration — and inevitably, the United States — will be.
"Mutts like me."
In American English, a mutt is a mixed breed dog.
By now, almost every American knows that Obama's mother was white and his father black, which will make him the U.S.'s first African-American president. Still, there was something startling, and telling, about hearing his self-description — particularly in how offhandedly he did it.

Yes, guess what. Everyone is of mixed race, just some more recently than others.
The only people who care about Obama’s “race” (which, as I have posted, in today’s America is nothing but a social construct anyway) are those who judge people by the color of their skin.
Had Obama looked more white, say, like Jeremiah Wright does, he might have chosen a different “racial identity.”
Is it really necessary or helpful (to him as President, first of all) for him to be continually navel-gazing in public?
Uh, no.
I’m seeing a pattern here: whenever Obama tries to do anything even remotely approaching self-deprecating humor, he not only completely bombs, he comes off as smug and social inappropriate-—no matter that the DBM tries to cover for him by describing his gaffes as demonstrating his “ease.”
Ease? Ha. He’s the most uneasy person we’ve had in public office in my memory.
That is not a good sign.

Yes. While most people would view it as displaying Obama’s lack of ease, look at the headline! The DBM described it as showing Obama’s ease!

Post racial? He and his wife are all about race- the racial church, him rejecting his white family, hiding his affirmative action background, her racist senior thesis. Heck, she minored in black studies...

The person who ‘burdened’ him with his color, giving him what he sees as a disadvantage, was never a part of his life. He’s very angry about this. The man impregnates his mother, leaves, and leaves Barack with problems that nobody else in the family he knows has. This would have to be difficult to deal with for anyone.
Those hyphenates dont mean “muts,” they mean people who immigrated here.
In other word, to call someone a mutt, even oneself, is to devalue that person.
I actually liked when he said it. Proud to be a mutt too! And it does good things for those weak recessive genes. Mutts are more healthy!
I really think Obama deserves the benefit of the doubt on this utterance. He is obviously incredibly nervous about everything he says as he takes office. He is getting tongue-tied—anyone would. It was evident that the Nancy Reagan comment was unplanned and not meant to be hurtful either. He is used to gutter politics, and needs to stick to a script for every word, or be prepared to laugh at himself a whole lot, because we will analyze every single word...
Just because I thought it might come in handy one day....

5) sip every time someone speaks poorly about Republicans
6) Take 2 drinks every time an oBot says “Soon”
7) One drink for every time someone wonders about the mysterious “inner circle”
8) Drink up when you see someone using insults in place of reason.
9) Small sip every time an oBot insults someone else to cover up their own inadaquacies, and or small reproductive organs.
10) Drink when you hear an Obot say “Obama was born in Hawaii, look on factcheck.org!” (where Obots go for “truth”)
I agree, it also shows self hatred of his white half.
um, this is not news, and not even really notable. i’ve heard plenty of people of mixed race and ethnicity call themselves “mutts.”
though obama’s use of it for himself in direct reference to a dog is spot on. :P
