Blacks Are More Socially Conservative Than Barack Obama

One of the many holes in the progressive coalition that brought President-elect Barack Obama to power is making itself known in California. According to the Sacramento Bee:

...an overwhelming number—70 percent—of black voters in California...voted for Proposition 8 and helped secure its passage, according to exit polling conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International. African Americans, energized by Barack Obama's presidential bid, boosted their numbers at the polls this year to 10 percent of the state's electorate, up from 6 percent in 2004. "The Obama people were thrilled to turn out high percentages of African Americans, but (Proposition 8) literally wouldn't have passed without those voters," said Gary Dietrich, president of Citizen Voice, a nonpartisan voter awareness organization.

Latinos were 18 percent of California's voters, and through sheer numbers also contributed to Proposition 8's success. But 53 percent of Latino voters supported the measure, a much lower percentage than black voters. Among white and Asian voters, 49 percent voted for the measure.

African-American Democrats are fiscally progressive (to wit, in favor of more government benefits for low-income Americans) but many are socially quite conservative, due to the influence of the black church. As the Bee article notes, black support for the ballot initiative to ban gay marriage is what propelled it to victory. This may come as a surprise to many white liberals who believe African-Americans to be on their side on social issues as well as financial issues.

I'm not sure I agree with the following citation, because it comes from an antiabortion rights website, but it represents the feelings of a segment of African-Americans:

Based upon various studies over the past 25 years, it is clear that a substantial majority of African Americans are opposed to abortion. An early study published in 1973 conducted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Charlotte, North Carolina, concluded that black Americans, especially young black males, are suspicious that genocide is the aim of family planning programs controlled by whites

It is also true that African-American women experience higher rates of abortions than other groups of women.

In the United States, the abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women.

How the pro-choice Obama administration will bring these two groups (African-Americans and gays and lesbian) together during the next four years could prove to be more difficult than righting the economy. Stay tuned.

Not sure it is a conservative thing at all.
Those who falsely claim to champion civil rights simply do not want to share the shakedown money with gays.

Black people won’t show up when there’s no black president to vote for. Put all the socially liberal propostiions on ballots in off years.

Mission Accomplished!

this is a myth....blacks are not socially conservative, at least the majority....if they were, they wouldn't have most of their children out of wedlock, they wouldn't have rap music and they wouldn't have the drug culture and they wouldn't have the gang culture......

are they openly against gay marriage?.....maybe......one thing out of several does not make them conservative.

I'd estimate that 95% of Americans are more conservative than Barack Obama - black, white, yellow, red and green.

There are hookers who moonlight at abortion clinics that are more socially conservative than Obama.

I just posted a link for a liberal black women in a blogtalk chat room tonight about Margaret Sanger. She had no knowledge of Sanger and her plans of black genocide. It was an eye opener for her. She was recommending to others to check it out. Hopefully...

I recently had a very nice and long conversation with a black man, who mentioned his excitement for President-elect Obama. I told him that I voted for McCain, but will pray for Obama, for his safety, and wish him the best. He is, after all, the man of God's choosing for our ruler, for better or worse.

Painting with a huge broad brush, blacks are more conservative, more passionate as a group than whites. They have more "heart" and can be sympathetic on the social issues, incl. marriage and life. The Republican Party is still seen in their circles as rigid, unable to relate. I'd submit for your consideration that perhaps it is that, rather than social issues, that drives the blacks away from "the man" and the Republican party. For whatever reason, I even as a white man seem to relate to things they care about - perhaps because that was my chosen topic for a research paper, perhaps because of various friends of a darker shade I've had over the years. There is a common yearning for human compassion for our fellow man that most people share, for our common belonging in the family of man. In that sense, Obama probably gained many points with his "scalpel, not a hatchet" sentiment.

Do we oppose Obama and his radical agenda? Absolutely. Don't back down! But please, let's try to recognize many of the divisions are cultural, not moral.

Headline reads:

Blacks Are More Socially Conservative Than Barack Obama

Barack Obama is indifferent to the spectacle of a doctor leaving a newborn infant simply to die. To be less socially conservative than Barack Obama one would have to find joy in that death.

Thanks for that. Who knows how much change can ripple out of something as simple as giving someone information they didn’t have before?

Blacks are not liberal on everything. They are the opposite of gays when it comes to traditional values. The election has exposed a deep divide between two Democratic constituencies.

They voted for him out of a sense of pride. You would too. To have one your own make is worth celebrating. That doesn't mean they agree with all of Obama's positions. The mistake the Democrats are making is they think Americans share the positions of the party's radical left wing. Just the opposite. This election was about change, not about a particular ideological mandate.

Duhh tell us something we didn’t already know US News and World report. Many Black folks don’t want to have anything to do with homosexuality. The Downlow is wreaking havoc in the black community amongst other pathologies.

Yes! My black friends and I very much share conservative values, though they voted for Obama and I voted for McCain. I do not believe black leaders accurately portray the true values of working class black people. Most long for the same thing all of us long for..Family, peace, beginning in our own communities, friendship with our neighbors, opportunity to develop the talents we have, good health and a world without war, among many other things. Yesterday, I was shopping at my local “Dollar General,” store, which I go to frequently these days, and as I was leaving, my arms full of bags, a black couple, about my own age, was coming in. They, with one on each side of the double doors swung those doors wide for me with a friendly greeting and big smiles. I was almost moved to tears by the symbolism. It is too often the case that that the rappers, the gangsters, the drug pushers and others who exploit, get a foot hold in some communities and destroy the true hope for the majority of the people. I read the other day where someone said that the greatest thing Barack Obama has done is to have given the young black male a new icon to look up to. We all know the sports figures have the opportunity to do that, but, too often, they model bad behavior. Our world is in a terrible mess but we are in it together and my prayer and my hope is that we will continue to try to encourage our black children to take advantage of the opportunities out there and to realize that equality of outcome is not insured for any of us..That depends on our own perseverance and our own work ethic. I am totally against giving anyone a free ride. I came from a poor farm family and I never had a free ride..I still work hard everyday of my life and probably will have to until I drop. God bless America and help us not to look to our politicians as saviors but to those around us in our own communities with whom we share so much common ground.

NO racism here by blacks.
Just because over 95 percent of blacks voted for this liberal socialist cesspool.

More than two, actually. Don't forget the way that HRC was trashed by the Obama team. *THAT* resentment has not gone away either. The next several years are going to be "interesting" in many respects, as all this continues to shake out...

Yes because in the valley of the blind the one eyed man is king. The myth of Black conservatism is a joke. On a 1 to 100 scale if the Black rank and file gets a 4, Obama’s zero does look liberal but it doesn’t make the Blacks as a whole conservative. This line is old and tired.
