Palin in spotlight as Republicans turn on each other [FR mention]
guardian.co.uk ^ | Nov 8, 2008 | Oliver Burkeman in Washington

As the implosion of the defeated Republican campaign continued yesterday, the landscape of American conservatism was dotted with signs that these were very strange times indeed.

Rush Limbaugh, behemoth of rightwing radio, took to the airwaves to declare war on two enemies: Barack Obama and the Republican party. Bloggers at FreeRepublic.com, an internet hub for conservatives, announced a boycott of Fox News and John McCain's aides fell over one another to leak embarrassing details about the campaign to the press.

Liberals, indulging in what the writer Andrew Sullivan termed "Palinfreude", were presented with a smorgasbord, ranging from the tale of how McCain's pro-Palin foreign policy adviser had his Blackberry confiscated in the closing days of the race, to how the party had paid for Todd Palin's silk boxer shorts.

The fighting consuming the McCain and Palin camps threatened to derail broader efforts to overhaul the Republican party after Tuesday's decisive defeat, for which some insiders blamed Sarah Palin. Veterans of the right gathered in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, on Thursday for a summit on the movement's future, but even as they did so, the blame went on.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is worse than I thought," Limbaugh told listeners. "What the Republican party, led by disgruntled and failed McCain staffers, is trying to do to Sarah Palin, is unconscionable ... There are country-club, blue-blood ... Republicans who want nothing to do with a firebrand conservative [who] can fire up people." He added: "We're going to be taking on two things here [over] the next four years: Obama, and our own party establishment."

John Fund, a Wall Street Journal columnist, said he had received multiple calls from campaign aides wanting "to use me as a conduit for their complaints".

“...not going to be elected President because she is a woman. It is a reality that we should not ignore.”

I strongly disagree. Don’t forget that Obama only received about 52% of the popular vote. Furthermore, Gov. Palin was the only reason McCain received as many votes as he did. Gov. Palin connects with the average conservative. Unlike McCain, she is genuine.

Your assumption has no merit. After all, we now have a black President. There are many conservatives, including myself, that would vote for Gov. Palin if she ran for the President of the United States.

Are we at war? Are we boycotting FoxNews?

I have a theory on Schmidt.

He was the one responsibile for McCain’s mega hit YouTube vids, so we were told, before the Veep pick. All of the positive attention was on him. He was the “spoiled only child” of the campaign. Then Gov. Palin comes in and blows everyone away. No more constant “attaboys” and warm fuzzies for Schmidt, all eyes on Gov. Palin.

"Palin is no Ronald Reagan. Many people have problem with a woman President including most women. It is just the nature of the American electorate and the nature of women. Palin is a damaged good after this election and she knows it."

That's twisted logic. They didn't seem to have a problem with a black Marxist.

I’m not as religious in the evangelical sense as I was when I was younger. I’m more sympathetic to the Catholic position now.

But regardless of one’s religion or non-religion, lets remember what Pastor Niemoller said over and over again.

First they came for ........ but I didn’t care because I wasn’t a ...........

United we will stand or divided we will fall.

Most women will not elect a woman for President and that will be Palin problem. In addition to that she is a very damaged good right now and she knows it.

Palin has been damaged by this campaign very badly and she cannot recover. I hope that the grass root will not waste time and enegy in the next 4 years trying to push her to run for President. We have few good men on our side who are not damaged and can win.

The Republican party lost this election for one very simple reason - they abandoned their principals.

1. Bush interfered in the marketplace. He allowed the federal government to buy out banks, insurance companies and mortgages. That’s socialism and it’s not a Republican value.

2. Let’s face it - Republicans in congress betrayed us. They sold out the rank and file to special interests. They lost touch with the rank and file, and the rank and file drifted away.

3. The Republican party is NOT about ‘God and Country’. It is about freedom. it’s about less government - LESS government. Not ‘gay marrage’. Not ‘war on drugs’. And certainly NOT a war in the middle east. LESS government, more individual choices. And if that means letting someone make a ‘bad’ choice, then so be it. THAT is what freedom is all about.

4. The Republicans became vicious. They’re still vicious. Look at the differences between McCain’s election night speech and Obama’s speech. Republicans actually booed when McCain mentioned Obama’s name. talk about rude! We are BETTER than this! the level of racist and unprofessional conduct among McCain staffers and rank and file supporters was very visible. And that cost McCain at the polls.

Look, nobody likes to loose. But the Republican party worked very hard to lose this race. we can either recognize that there is a sickness infecting the conservative movement and do something about it or we can ignore the problem and keep losing elections.

McCain wouldn’t have had to sign up for federal matching funds if some Republicans would have given generously to his campaign from the beginning. Too many on the right behave like children holding their breath because they don’t get exactly what they want. Now they have President Obama.

Palin is no Ronald Reagan. Many people have problem with a woman President including most women. It is just the nature of the American electorate and the nature of women. Palin is a damaged good after this election and she knows it.

What about the nature of men? They did take old Hillary down a peg now didn't they. Sarah Palin represents strength and lives it. Too many American women have become so Oprahized all they want to do is lay on the couch and talk to their shrinks.

Then you have the men who have been brought up to believe that God put woman on earth for them to dominate. They believe that it was God talking when it was Adam that said that woman you gave me God made me sin.

There is a certain depth of character, caring and commitment about her that defies any words I can attempt to employ here.

Think about it. She was thrust onto the national stage and under a microscope by a skeptical, antagonistic media who saw her mere presence as a potential threat to the Messianic anointment of The One. She had an incredibly steep learning curve, and quickly found her sea legs with grace and resolve. Very tall order, and pressure that few of us could have handled.

The decision to toss her into the fray with lefties like Katie and Gibson was a tactical error. In their own special way, their objective was to sabotage, not to learn who she is. After her stirring convention speech, get her with Hannity, Rush, Levin, and Laura Ingraham. Let her hone that style and gain the confidence with supportive interviewers.

She absolutely shines. I hope we see a lot more of her, and soon.

Have you met her, or have you been up close to see her speak?
