As the implosion of the defeated Republican campaign continued yesterday, the landscape of American conservatism was dotted with signs that these were very strange times indeed.
Rush Limbaugh, behemoth of rightwing radio, took to the airwaves to declare war on two enemies: Barack Obama and the Republican party. Bloggers at FreeRepublic.com, an internet hub for conservatives, announced a boycott of Fox News and John McCain's aides fell over one another to leak embarrassing details about the campaign to the press.
Liberals, indulging in what the writer Andrew Sullivan termed "Palinfreude", were presented with a smorgasbord, ranging from the tale of how McCain's pro-Palin foreign policy adviser had his Blackberry confiscated in the closing days of the race, to how the party had paid for Todd Palin's silk boxer shorts.
The fighting consuming the McCain and Palin camps threatened to derail broader efforts to overhaul the Republican party after Tuesday's decisive defeat, for which some insiders blamed Sarah Palin. Veterans of the right gathered in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, on Thursday for a summit on the movement's future, but even as they did so, the blame went on.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is worse than I thought," Limbaugh told listeners. "What the Republican party, led by disgruntled and failed McCain staffers, is trying to do to Sarah Palin, is unconscionable ... There are country-club, blue-blood ... Republicans who want nothing to do with a firebrand conservative [who] can fire up people." He added: "We're going to be taking on two things here [over] the next four years: Obama, and our own party establishment."
John Fund, a Wall Street Journal columnist, said he had received multiple calls from campaign aides wanting "to use me as a conduit for their complaints".

Awesome post BUMP!
As a women and as a card carrying member of the Republican women, I can verify that Sarah Palin will be supported as a candidate for President by women. After working day after day for the this campaign it was obvious that the ground swell for the McCain campaign happened after Sarah Palin was announced the the VP pick by both men and women.
“We have few good men on our side who are not damaged and can win.”
Who? Where were they????????????????????????
It looks small and petty when we boo at the mere mention of the Obama’s name. It’s hard for folks to take us seriously when we do that. Let all the attention be on Obama and his middle-fingering and snarky quips. He does all this stuff routinely without any help from us, so why give anything that looks like an excuse to his supporters?
All we have to do is remain stoic while he mugs and pranks. Folks will pick up on it and see the difference. They’ll notice how stupid it looks when an adult in his position does that. Bush, for all his faults at the podium, NEVER treats people with the contempt and irreverance that Obama often displays. All we have to do is remind folks with our behavior and a quiet word that that’s what the DEMS do, not us!
Yeah, we can make and point fun at Obama plenty. A good and honest dig is worth a lot with the general public, too. All I’m asking is that when one of our own is offering a gracious concession or paying a genuine compliment, let’s be on the same page with the speaker while they’re making it. We’ll have our fun afterwards.
” It is the women who would have a major problem with her because most women do not like to be ruled by another women.”
You’re doing a lot of shooting off your mouth and assuming something that you can’t speak of since you’re not a woman. I have never had a problem working for a woman... only one “rules” me...... His name is Jesus Christ.
Nana
I'll agree with you there, FRiend. But alas, it was McCain, who apparently hasn't seen a socialist since Hanoi, God bless him.
Sarcasm aside, if I were in that crowd at that time, I doubt I would have booed. I may have growled though, or at least exhaled through my teeth.
Jim, you can read my tagline to know what I think about this Sarah bashing.
BTW, Jim, do you have Gov. Palin’s e-mail so I can send a thank-you to her please? Thanks.
If anyone else has info about getting, I would appriciate it. Thanks again.
bump
Friend, put down the Kool-Aid immediately!
That may be so, but where's McCain now? Haven't heard a peep from him in defense of Palin.
It's like he's just left her twisting in the wind....
Jim, thanks for FR & getting it back up, I’m tethered to an oxygen bottle that I was about to chew on till I could see FR again. As for the detractors of Palin, you guys might start suggesting how she could improve her already GREAT standing with the majority of conservatives. Like it or not, she’s going to be a power in GOP circles if she wants to be, unlike McNasty, who was a flawed candidate from the start. And as I said on another thread, I smell the stench of a spoiler or two in those lies and rumors; someone who wants Sarah out of the way for 2012. Now who might stand to gain from this bashing? Hmmmmmm?
I didn't know our comments were so important. FNC are you listening?
Look at her campaign rallies. I saw just as many women as men there. If she is damaged right now it was by anonymous unnamed cowards within our party. Newsweek has put out a bunch of misinformation about her and people are taking that as gospel. This worked for the past 8 years because the Republicans were to weak kneed to defend themselves. So far I see Sarah fighting back. That's how you win. You Betcha.
You are quite wrong about that. I decided to selectively boycott FNC myself after Carl Cameron's hit piece on Sarah.
Thank you, nutmeg, for this link below. You put a smile on my face on this beautiful Sunday morning as I got to listen to Sarah being Sarah! I will be sending this on to friends who I know will love seeing this interview! Thanks again!:)
