NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A jury acquitted an undocumented immigrant of killing a mother and daughter.
Police thought they had plenty of evidence to convict Jose Murillo Sosa.
Now, the victims' family and prosecutors are trying to understand the verdict.
Relatives are upset, and so are prosecutors who thought they had plenty of evidence to at least put Sosa away for the rest of his life.
Tim Rountree said his 16-year-old niece Adrian Rountree loved to draw and color.
"We were all stunned," he said.
But Rountree will also have to remember Adrian and her mother by what some are saying was a complete surprise.
Jurors acquitted the 16-year-old who lives next door Lori and Adrian Rountree.
Police said they were stabbed dozens of times in their home more than two years ago in South Nashville.
Assistant District Attorney Kathy Morante said it's the first time she's been surprised by a verdict.
"We had evidence of a bloody fingerprint belonging to the defendant as well as other fingerprints that were not bloody," she said.
"We felt it was almost a before and after picture that there were prints going into the house that were not bloody, and the print leaving the home which was bloody," she said.
Morante said police also recovered Sosa's DNA on a murder weapon mixed in with the victim's blood.
During a police interview, prosecutors said, Sosa denied being inside the Rountree home.
The jury deliberated five and a half hours before returning the not guilty verdict.
Now, Tim Rountree and the rest of his family must move on.
He'll always have memories.
"Eventually, regardless of what happens with a jury in a case like this there is a judge. They will have to answer to for eternity," he said.
Prosecutors said the jury was not interested in talking to them after the verdict. Criminal Court Judge Mark Fishburn would not release the juror list.
Police said Sosa is an illegal immigrant from Honduras. He will be deported.
It's the second time he's been in the United States illegally, but he can't face federal charges until he crosses the border illegally for a third time
He’ll probably sue for harassment. And win.
It's the second time he's been in the United States illegally, but he can't face federal charges until he crosses the border illegally for a third time Jorge Bush's, Juan McCain's, and Barack Obambi's fault! |

He was probably supported by Jimmmmmmie Carter.
If they lost, it’s the prosecution’s fault. I was on a jury and the prosecution didn’t prove the guy was guilty. We had to let him off. That’s what prosecutors get paid for. They didn’t do their job.
A long long time ago, courts were kept honest by the credible threat of a lynch mob.
Then they let these things go on for years and years.
It’s impossible to imagine the emotional carnage this family must live with.
If you’ve been a victim of this kind of violence, the single thing you hold on to is that the perp will be punished. That’s so very, very little to ask.
Now, they won’t even have that, little as it is. My heart breaks for them.
This is disgraceful. How dare they do this to an illegal.
My side of Nashville, btw. These folks have no respect for community, for neighbors, for law.
Someone call Barry. This kid deserves a medal. /s
Get a load of this.
Oh course he shouldn’t be convicted for murder. He’s just a downtrodden immigrant come here to work and was oppressed by white society. In fact he deserves to be here more than us, because he is replacing the intolerant.
(Just let it happen to one of mine. The government can send me a check for services rendered.)
I've driven up and down the Briley Parkway a few times. Um....and I've also gone down into the Vandy and Belmont areas. Does that count?
I'm visiting Nashveg...I mean, Nashville again in December, but I'll basically be on Vandy's campus almost the entire time.
LOL. His DNA was found at the murder scene in the victims’ blood. How dense does a jury or judge have to be to not do his job?
And some juries want a video tape with audio soundtrack of the crime. Color is helpful.
When the prosecution can’t provide one, well, hell...they ain’t doin’ their job.
Ah, yes. Named for Nashville's first Metro Mayor. He was Mayor when I was born, the last non-liberal. A long time ago in a Nashville far, far away. You're close to the REAL (nightmare version of) Nashville of today when you're on there. Get off and go by Murfreesboro Road and Thompson Lane (I'm a mile off M'boro Road) and over to Nolensville Road and it's loads of fun. Bring your gun, lots of ammo, and your English-Spanish dictionary. They're all over the place. Watch out for them, because they walk into the street at will. Speeding cars and traffic signs don't deter them.
"Um....and I've also gone down into the Vandy and Belmont areas. Does that count?"
Nope, because that's fantasy land. That's the rich and privileged White liberal cocoon where they like to pontificate on what society, morality and laws ought to be instead of what they are. Real people don't live there. Cartoon characters do.
"I'm visiting Nashveg...I mean, Nashville again in December, but I'll basically be on Vandy's campus almost the entire time."
Lovely. Only time I ever really spent there was in the early '80s taking swimming lessons (and at Belmont becoming an expert on computers in the "WarGames" era -- the halcyon days) in my early yoot before you wuz had. I miss the '80s back when right was right and wrong was wrong. Now it's just... ugh.
Depends on how the evidence was handled. If the police and prosecution were sloppy with documentation and procedures than that is enough to give a jury reasonable doubt of guilt. Arrogance of prosecutors will turn a jury against “the peoples case” real quick.
I am not saying that this “poor undocumented worker” (HA!) wasn’t guilty as sin, it was just that the jury did not convict him. It is not like he got off on a “technicality” like the judge throwing all sorts of evidence out, not to be seen by a jury (like with the sack of puss, William Ayers), but the evidence seen by the jury was not enough to convict.
Hell....he was probably related to Obama.
Wait, the area down by Grassmere? That area was sketchy as hell last time I was there [to visit the Zoo, which seemed like a perfectly good place, and I even saw other cars with Va. plates and Loudoun stickers (!!!)].
