I have to say that my gut response is “screw them” - these are people who make their living harassing other people... I just don’t feel sorry for them

Yes, if only salesmen were allowed to phone us day and night, the economy would still be booming!

This sets off the BS detectors. I can’t imagine shutting down telemarketers hurting the economy in any big way. Who in the hell buys anything from a telemarketer?

I’d say about the same percentage that buys something from an email spammer.

The think tank suggests possible amendments to the way the lists are administered. These include: Charging a small fee for registration and setting a time-out clause that forces residencies to renew every three months.

%#&* them. I'll get rid of my damm phone first. Next it will be cell phones.

I’m having a real tough time worrying about the telemarketers.

The think tank estimates that over 100,000 jobs have been lost as a result of these initiatives and upwards of (USD) $10 billion has been removed from the economy. Up to 20,000 businesses may have closed thanks to the measures. The lists have significantly added to marketing costs of many businesses and have had a negative environmental impact as a result of business being forced to use less environmentally-friendly methods of attracting clientele, for instance, the use of printed flyers.

I call BS with a capital B.

I hate getting recorded messages on my Cell (well, I hate it on my landline as well, but at least that doesn’t cost me any money).

I don’t know if I could vote to convict if I was on the jury of someone accused of kneecapping one of them.

I was polled a dozen times in the last month. All legal, of course. Made me cranky.

I don’t want to be called by telemarketers. I’m not going to buy the junk. Now I don’t have to listen to the sales pitches.

GOOD! Even if the entire world tanks it's still worth it.

The economy would be booming even more if these people could just break into my house while I was here and directly steal my money. So I guess that should be allowed too in the name of economic growth.

Telemarketing companies going out of business does not fit my definition of a “problem”.

If a business or industry cannot survive without intruding on people who have made it clear they want to be left alone, it has no business existing.

The same is true for businesses that claim they cannot survive without illegal alien labor.

They are parasites. Our land line gets many of these calls per day, we have been on do not call list for 3 years.

There is a $10,000 fine if they violate the list. There is information on how to sue them and collect damages.
I am seriously looking attempting to do this

To the telemarketers: tough, ya need a tissue? I got one that I’m not using.

Nonsense.
I never in my lifetime bought anything because someone called my home at suppertime. In fact there were probally things that I might have wanted to buy that I did not because that had pissed me off so much.
My Being on the no call list does not cost these people one cent as they never would have gotten one from me. It does allow them to call someone else that is not on the list that might buy something from them.

Just as I long thought, the real cause of the recession! Case in point: Layoffs at my company this week (seriously), which sells million dollar software packages. If you evil conservatives had taken those supper time calls, many working class people in my workplace would still have jobs.

Lets repeal the income tax and put all the IRS people out of work as well. Then they could compete with telemarketers for real jobs.

I guess I can't be too surprised at the reactions here. I was one of the few arguing that the nannie govt shouldn't be deciding who gets to call you or not. The economy shrinks when the govt gets to decide which information reaches you and which does not. At the time I suggested the phone companies could offer do-not-call as an benefit the same way some banks offer free ATM's (in network or out).

But again I was shot down, the govt must regulate ATM fees as well. So much for conservatism.
