President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan this afternoon to apologize for a joke about her having heald "séances" in the White House, an Obama aide said.
“President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off handed remark he made during today’s press conference," said transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. "The President-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share and they had a warm conversation."

During the Reagan presidency, the media mocked Nancy Reagan a good deal. They tried to suggest that Reagan was a lightweight and that Nancy was constantly telling him what to do. And they wrote stories saying that she had held seances.
Whether she did or not, I have no idea. I don’t trust the media any farther than I could kick them. Possibly she did something of the kind as a kind of game or joke. In any case, the media were constantly attacking and belittling the Reagans every chance they got.
I’m sure that Obama and his leftist friends were laughing about the Reagans as idiots back then, and when Obama said something awkward during his press conference, about only speaking to live presidents, the memory of Nancy Reagan’s much mocked seances came into his head and he joked about it to fix his odd statement.
It was really just a case of the kind of things liberals joke about with each other—but not meant for public consumption. Still, I’m surprised he apologized. It’s not something he does very often.
Can we mark this down as the 1st Official Apology from the Obama Administration?
At this rate he has to be good for a dozen or so of these a month. I wonder who will receive the next Official Apology?
