Vet Hunter eager to offer views to Obama

California will send two new congressmen to Washington next year, and one of them will be Republican Duncan D. Hunter of Lakeside, son of Rep. Duncan Hunter, who has represented East County for 28 years.

The younger Hunter soundly defeated Democrat Mike Lumpkin in the 52nd Congressional District, 57 percent to 39 percent, thereby keeping the seat in the GOP column.

With Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Carlsbad, beating back a challenge by Democrat Nick Leibham in the 50th Congressional District, none of San Diego's five congressional districts will change party affiliation.

While Democrats may pick up 20 or more House seats nationwide, California's 34-19 Democrat-Republican split likely will remain unchanged in the upcoming 111th Congress.

One California House seat, the 4th District in northeastern California, was up in the air, with Republican Tom McClintock and Democrat Charlie Brown separated by fewer than 500 votes. That contest could take days to decide.

Duncan D. Hunter, a Marine Corps Reserve captain who has served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, said yesterday he was eager to offer his insight on the two war-torn nations.

“If the opportunity arises, I'd like to help President (Barack) Obama in any way possible for success in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Hunter said.

...but it does include eliminating the combat exclusion rule for women, registering women for the draft, and Gay Pride Day at Fort Bragg, among other things.

How about McClintock, any news there? I see he was ever so slightly ahead as of yesterday. I wonder if they will have to have a recount.
