I wouldn’t call 34% a minority. And the 34% is tired of having no representation.

Here are the relevant numbers (2004 here and 2008 here):

* 21 percent claimed to be liberal in 2004 versus 22 percent in 2008
* 34 percent claimed to be conservative in both 2004 and 2008

I believe 34 percent are conservatives but the conservatives include two strains as far as I can see. A group of religious conservatives for whom issues such as abortion are up at the top of their list. And a group of less religious or secular ones more concerned with taxation, size of governnment.

And therein the conservatives can be split. It may be hard to have one from the first group elected in my humble opinion.

Yes it's still a right-of-center country. Unfortunately there are still too many uninformed people. That's how we get Obama.

I wouldn’t call 34% a minority.

49% is a minority. Liberals and moderates outnumber conservatives by about 2:1. If conservatives are to win elections, they must pull more than 50% of the moderates over to their side. If they have only conservatives, they lose.
