McCain fails to win Latino support

Arizona Sen. John McCain was hammered by the Latino vote, hurting him in battleground states of Florida, Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico as he lost his presidential bid to Barack Obama.

Obama took two-thirds of the overall Hispanic vote and McCain got 32 percent, according to exit polls conducted by NBC News. George Bush got 44 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004.

McCain also didn’t fare well among younger and working-class voters and did not do as well as Bush with whites, middle-class and older voters.

Well, you know the OBL’s are going to argue that McCain was doing fine with Hispanics until he “pandered” to the GOP on the subject of immigration, and went back on some of his positions.

well that probably ticked off both camps who saw him as trying to have it both ways. Nobody wants a dancer and so much for straight talk.

You can’t say McCain hasn’t tried to give America away to them

The 'fence' aside. . .he was in favor of not punishing those already here; those who showed 'good intentions' and whom were already employed. . .

The reason we are in this situation is because idiots like John McCain, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and others tacitly (and in some cases overtly) refused to enforce validly enacted immigration laws.

Enforce the damn law...or risk the death of the rule of law, and at that point, who the hell needs Congress critters and Senators!

well they are conservative enough to help pass prop 8 in CA and similar laws in other states

Hmmm, socially conservative socialists?

Come to think of it, that's the value cluster that pretty well defines the old Federalists -- "monarchists without the king" -- like Hamilton.

So, why didn't they support McCain?

Dems must have done a better job pandering economically -- and speaking Spanish at rallies and waving Mexican flags and repudiating the United States, its people and culture. That might appeal.

Have a 'housekeeper' 'illegal' and here for thirteen years and non-voting; owns her home etc. She is a good, hard-working person; as was her husband; who has now been deported. . .and both share a wonderful family; fine children etc. All of whom are threatened by latest turn of events.

Anyway; to my larger point here; she offered that Obama frightened her; that she watched the debates and did not trust him because he never really answered the questions put to him. She did not like the 'adulation'. She said that she has seen 'Obama grafitti' that warns of 'Obama bin Biden'. ..

She still does not understand how/why so many American's think he is good for America.

I voted for the ticket, only because of Sarah Palin. If she had not been the nominee (or someone of similar conservative values) I would not have voted for the GOP candidates.

because mccain doesn’t know how to make the case for fiscal conservatism to hispanics as well as blacks, single moms, union members, himself...
Joe the plumber was too little too late. We had such a long campaign. Where was Jose the plumber?

Yeah, that's tough to do.

Probably has something to do with why Barry Goldwater said more than once, that Richard Nixon was the most dishonest man he'd ever met in his life, and Barry had no use for him.

Nixon was a career negotiator and adjuster and nuance-nodder. He also went back on his Republican principles to do wage and price controls in 1971 -- although going to Peking, in retrospect, was probably a good idea.

Still, all the praise from the chattering classes for China and wage-and-price controls bought him what exactly, when Watergate broke?

So I guess his very very stupid support for amnesty didn’t do too much to help him with illegals and latinos.
Hear that John you stupid?

I also like Palin. I myself am from Texas and to answer your prior post, I worked on a ranch there in Texas many years. I know, back when I was younger.. many many years ago, that the illegals I knew that worked on the ranch where I did were very hard workers.. but in the last couple of decades, everything has been going downhill. Not pointing fingers, but I despise people that CAN work, but refuse to because they know that they can sit on the couch watching Opra or Springer and get welfare checks. That, of course, not directed at the illegals, but any and all people that want everything given to them. Sorry, maybe I went a little overboard there.....

Unlike the usually monolithic black vote, hispanics tend to be quite a bit more diversified in philosophy. Very few Americans of hispanic heritage want the Mexican invasion to continue any more than I do.

“John McCain’s campaign was fatally wounded by the financial meltdown that took an essentially tied race in mid-September to a decisive Obama victory on election day. Without the financial crisis, I believe John McCain would have equaled or exceeded George W. Bush’s 2004 support of two out of five Latino voters.”

That defies logic. McCain and Obama voted for the bailout bill. Unless the author is claiming that latinos are blaming McCain for the problem it's an illogical argument.

McCain NEVER had a majority of latinos. He's not socialist enough for them. Barack is.

I think it’s true that it was the economic stuff that scared Latino voters, but I also think the GOP has to work hard to change its image as being the party that hates Hispanics. That is the image the Dems are promoting, and unfortunately, they usually manage to find some GOPer who will say something that backs up this image.

Bush also pandered to them...so why did he win more than mccain?

Because he promised them a "new America". One like the one they left behind.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Har, Har. (That was McCain-Kennedy’s immigration reform laughing all the way to the democrat's illegal alien/illegal foreign donated money bank.)

Seriously, a Washington insider position didn't matter much with (new) Mexican voters (er, immigrant). Most have not been here long enough to notice: BUT they DO vote according to THEIR local culture and THEIR local political neighborhood leaders. Who were “community organized” very effectively.

Notice that the Spanish language stations didn't even CARRY the republican convention and its speeches.
