Voters pick Obama but local progressive agendas flop

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Despite a landslide for Democrats in the White House race, Americans voted more conservatively on Tuesday in a myriad of referendums on banning gay marriage and abortion.

Voters in some states rejected gay marriage rights and affirmative action and approved restrictions on adoption for unmarried couples.

However, results were mixed as other referenda across the country -- some 35 states were asked to consider 153 ballot questions -- showed voters in favor of assisted suicide and against outright bans on abortion.

In California, Florida, Arizona and Arkansas, voters rejected gay marriage.

In Arkansas, they voted to prevent anyone who isn't married from adopting a child. The decision was decried by gay rights supporters who said it would limit their ability to adopt children.

But voters rejected a near-total ban on abortion in South Dakota and Colorado and allowed assisted suicide in Washington state, making it the second US state after Oregon to allow the procedure for terminally ill people.

America is more conservative than it wants to show on some choices and issues, it seems.

All the black voters that turned out ended up defeating liberal measures.

Ironic twist.

As I noted here, Obama was not elected for the content of his character, but for the contentlessness of his rhetoric--a Rorschach test onto which voters projected their own hopes and dreams.

What a travesty of justice!

It also means conservatism didn’t die on Nov 4th and that our country is truly complex political-wise.

Good. As it should be.

Prop 11 also passed in CA, which is a (small) start on sensible reapportionment.
Lessons I take are:
People want change, but they also want to uphold traditional values.

They hate war and leaders that misrepresent issues. In general, there is great anger at political leadership.
With the economy going into a tail-spin, I’m figuring on “Obamaville’s” eventually poping up in DC and across the country.
Obama may garner hate at a level beyond imaginable now.

Just shows Obama’s election was about race, first and last. Blacks were thrilled to have one of their own as President, and some whites were looking to assuage their perceived guilt for the institution of slavery.
