While driving across the sunny landscape of Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota in the early summer -- with Rush Limbaugh on the radio from 12-3 Eastern Time every day -- it was easy to be a proud American and easy to forget that a place like Washington D.C. even existed.
