I think we need to do more than write them off, only court white voters, but let blacks join us if they care to!

How are you going to force them to join us ? Give them walking around money in Philly ?

They are the political enemies of the party that freed them from slavery because they have chosen to believe Democrat propaganda. We tell them the truth and they hate us.

KLo has a blurb on the NR Corner today, written from their cruise. She says while Fred and Mitt have turned down her requests to step up as RNC chairman, there is buzz on the boat for Michael Steele to take that role—which I think would be fantastic. He’s charming, approachable, energetic and conservatively principled.

Michale Steele is a great man. I would like to see him run for office again. He could not persuade enough Marylanders with black skin to vote for him the last time. He deserved their vote but they chose Ben Cardin instead. He definitely "reached out" to those communities. They exercised their right to vote and said "no!"

The GOP welcomes all Americans who share our values (and they are diverse values) to join us.

I understand your frustration, but I think it’s not only a question of how many black votes we get: there are a lot of suburban moderates who don’t want to belong to a party that they think is unwelcoming to minorities. If we don’t make a strong, legitimate effort to welcome and win over minority voters, those moderate voters don’t want to be tied to us. (Though that doesn’t mean we have to pander on the issues!)

I think there is something to the cliched ‘fiscally conservative, socially liberal’ moderate. They can only be pulled into our tent by our low-tax, small-government position. And though they don’t really believe in a lot of the most proactive and modern ‘social liberalism’, they surely don’t want to go with a party that’s not making an effort at inclusiveness. (And yes, there are those muscular-government, socially conservative Reagan Democrats too, but I don’t think they mostly want to join a party they suspect is narrow-casting for white voters only.)
