Republicans seize majorities in Tennessee Senate, House
Chattanooga Times Free Press ^ | November 5, 2008 | Andy Sher

Tennessee Republicans won a 19-to-14 state Senate majority in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial voting totals, while House Republicans appeared to have gained a 50-to-49 margin in that chamber, giving them control of it for the first time since 1971.

For the first time since post-Civil War Reconstruction, the GOP holds majorities in both chambers, Republicans said.

House and Senate Republicans also have enough votes — 69 — to capture the three constitutional offices of secretary of state, comptroller and treasurer. The state’s 132 legislators elect the constitutional officers, and it takes 67 votes to win.

Unofficial returns showed Republican Senate candidate Ken Yager of Harriman, Tenn., won the hotly contested 12th Senate District race with Democrat Becky Ruppe.

Republicans have had operational control of the 33-member Senate, but it has been divided 16-16 between Democrats and Republicans, with a Republican turned independent, Sen. Mike Williams of Maynardville, often siding with Democrats. Unofficial returns show Mr. Williams losing to Republican Mike Faulk in the 4th Senate District and Democrats also losing the 26th Senate District.

Going into the election, House Democrats held a 53-46 edge over Republicans. But they lost four seats. That puts House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower, R-Bristol, in position to become speaker barring any unforeseen circumstances.

“The election of a Republican majority in the General Assembly is historic in its own right, and even more so given the strong Democratic tide across much of the country,” said Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Robin Smith. “Our victories send a national message that Republican values still resonate with mainstream America.”

Naifeh was going to put a whole lot of his own money into the 8 empty seats and support and stump for Dems all around the state..

However he had serious competition himself this time and had to stay home and defend his own seat...

This made a lot of difference to the political landscape...

He’s dead, Jim...

I'm sure I'll fit right in with my New England accent.Although more than a few people think I have more of a New York accent (God only knows how I would have picked *that* up).

I think you’d like East Tennessee. Summers can be fairly hot, but we have 4 distinct seasons here.

From Knoxville, you can reach Charleston SC in 6 hours flat and Myrtle Beach SC in 7 hours. It’s 10 hours to the Gulf coast.

If you like the mountains, check out properties around the “Big South Fork” national park, on the TN/KY line. Property values are going up there, since the Smoky Mountain area is over-developed.

Gee...it doesn't take much less than that for me to reach New York City. That's not bad at all.I've always lived near the ocean (except while the Department of the Army was my "landlord").Tennessee looks real good.I'll have to do more investigating.

This also means we have a republican lieutenant governor. As Steve Gill pointed out last night, Bredesen might find Washington a little more to his liking now, and may actually get appointed to some Sec. position. If that happens, we will get a republican governor.

We haven’t gotten rid of him, yet. With a 1-seat majority, all Naifeh has to do is bribe a single RINO to maintain the Speakership. At last count, he had about a dozen in his back pocket. He’s not going to roll over. Tyrants never do.

First order of business in the Senate is refusing to seat the rodent that was selected and not elected and ordering either a new election or Kurita be seated outright. The Senate is the final arbitor of its membership, not the TN Democrat party.

What? I live in Naifeh’s town. If, he had any competition at all, I never saw a sign or heard a word about. Do you know who the person was?

At the Republican “Ladies Day on the Hill” at the Capitol Building in Nashville, in April, some lady stood up and said her husband was running against Naifeh...

I dont know if he still needed the GOP nomination or not...

But he seemed to be a strong candidate...

I spend a lot of time in Nashville, and GOP legislators were talking about Naifeh’s competition..

That for the first time Naifeh was worried...

Well that’s a good sign. I think we should petition them for secession ASAP!
