Just a thought.
We were apparently so scared off by the 1994 revolution (even though we held the House in 1996 and increased our majority in the Senate) that in 2000 we chose a Compassionate Conservative to lead our party.
Instead of decreasing government, he massively increased it all the while telling us (through Rove) that we had to do this to stay electorally viable.
The result?
Let's look at Virginia.
In 2000- we held both Senate seats, a majority in the state legislature, and the Governorship.
Now, nothing.
If anyone wants to look at the "demographic" changes in Northern Virginia, I would point to the massive amounts of government employees hired under our own watch-
That's the demographic change. It is killing us. We have only ourselves to blame.
How right you are! Even Harry Byrd, Sr., would be appalled by all of this.
We can only hope that we’ve seen our last Bush as President.
We supported McCain mainly because the alternative was terrible, but he can leave the scene as well.
The Bushies have been wrecking the GOP since 1988, so now it’s time to rebuild the Reagan coalition. To do that, we’ve got to take the party back to its conservative roots.
North Carolina is a bit behind Virginia. We probably went Obama too and our demographics are shifting badly with the influx of yankees and hispanics. We aren’t safe red anymore.
You’re so right. Northern Virginia and Richmond overwhelmed the rest of the state.
Amen brother.
In 2006 we lost both the gov and a senator, this election, the statehouse.
Not that these guys were great governors, but look at how at one time we had the governorships of NJ, PA, NY, CA, OH, VA, NC, SC, and MD. How many of those are left?
I believe Virginia will come back to center right. Kaine is a milquetoast washup with no political future. Webb is a pretty conservative Democrat and while Warner is more of a centrist, he is fiscally conservative. Let’s face it: Gilmore was pretty lame as a candidate and, IMO, so was “Macacah”. There are several conservative Virginians who could play real importance with the state’s elections next year. One of them is Bob McDonnell, the others are Ken Cuccinelli and former Federal Attorney John Brownlee. Personally, I like John Chichester.
I would also point to the massive number of immigrants who are citizens technically, but only technically. They are bringing their values with them...and they’re much closer to the Obama/Kenya values than American values.
Really? We're responsible for illegal immigration and its aftermath?
No it really is the demographics.
Liberals have moved here and with the the black turnout put Obama over.
Dems ran as conservative-moderates and the successful ones act that way.
Would you have rather Bush hadn’t increased military spending after 9/11? That is where the lion’s share of increase went in Virginia.
Bush hasn’t stood up for himself- not against congress and not against the media. The Rep congress went wild and the voters kicked them out, the media has branded every problem a Republican failure. That’s his contribution to this disaster.
We have a big problem if you look at the electoral map. Slowly but surely VA is turning BLUE, North Carolina is heading to VA territory where it can flip easily and will be moderate. Colorado is trending Blue. NH is gone. PA is getting MORE blue instead of being a long held hope. FL is moving blue. NV is following CO and how long before Arizona follows CO?
There are no states trending Red. We picked up WVA and KY and kept them in 2000, but now there are none of the 2004 blue states in reach. Ohio and FL can still be flipped, but the trend is bad.
So even in a still 50/50ish country, the blue is bleeding into the Red with no alternate move. NY, CA, IL, MA and now PA are going to be blue until at least most of us on FR are dead...and even if a Republican somehow wins it, it surely won’t be a conservative.
I still think there is hope in the population as a whole, but the actual breakdown of the states is a big worry IMO.
The other problem is that the Northern states are going blue deep into the Senate and House choices, while southern and western states still pick Dems in the house and Senate.
A new conservative revolution like 1994 is going to be very difficult strategically.
Wasn’t Chichester the driving force in the General Assembly behind giving Marky Mark Warner the largest tax increase in the history of the Commonwealth? No thanks.

But I doubt that the new POTUS has the mandate or the will to keep order by invoking martial law in the cities.

I would like to see the totals after the military vote. Which I guess will not be counted now. Va appears to be real close to a 50- 50 state right now. About 300,000 more people voted this time than in 2004. That is what gave it to Obama. I still think conservatives can win in Va. I heard conservatives saying they would not vote for McCain in the Richmond area because he was to liberal.
Just wait until the 12,000,000 illegals become citizens and another 10,000,000 of their family members flood in. I’m afraid the cause really is lost and the demographics will prevent any possible recovery.
> the Democrats are going to be running the country for a long time and most of us alive are not going to see another conservative revolution. The demographics just broke against us. <
Maybe. But when the Obama-supporting young voters start to pay serious income taxes, I’ve gotta think a lot of them will “come back home” to the conservative side.
