Floridians approve (Constitutional) ban on gay marriage
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | November 5, 2008 | Josh Hafenbrack

Florida voters approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage Tuesday, handing a victory to social conservatives who pumped millions into the ballot drive aimed at ensuring the courts cannot legalize same-sex unions in the Sunshine State After a fierce battle waged on TV airwaves, Amendment 2 was poised to comfortably clear the 60 percent threshold to become law, according to unofficial election results with most precincts reporting late Tuesday night. It defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Voters "don't want what happened in Massachusetts, California, Connecticut to happen here in Florida," said John Stemberger, who ran the Yes 2 Marriage campaign. A well-funded opposition to Amendment 2 sought to portray the ban as overreaching, arguing the amendment's broad, vague wording could cast legal doubt on domestic partner benefits for unmarried, heterosexual couples

Florida's gay marriage amendment drew considerable attention, with dueling groups pumping more than $5 million into TV advertising and statewide campaigns. Same-sex marriage has been illegal in Florida since 1997, but supporters argued a constitutional shield was necessary to make sure judges would never overturn the law. Before Tuesday, 27 states had approved bans on same-sex marriage. Only Arizona in 2006 had rejected it. Opponents of Amendment 2 had focused resources on South Florida, trying to win over voters to offset culturally conservative North Florida. But that strategy didn't work: South Florida slightly favored Amendment 2, according to election returns.

How do people vote FOR someone who wants to do away with DOMA and vote AGAINST gay marriage, too? Don't they get it???Doing away with DOMA will negate any state's votes against gay marriage. We are truly a nation of (more than 50%) fools.

This initiative won at least a majority in 66 of Florida’s 67 counties. Only Monroe (Key West—surprise huh?) voted it down.

There were 600,000 more votes for President than on the gay marriage ban...

That means 600,000 voted for the presidential race, but left that amendment blank.

FL went 51-49 for Obama, not exactly a landslide. It’s a very narrow victory.

My son said the wisest thing tonight.

He said, people don’t want socialism- they are just deceived by the media and a very deceptive man.

They are going to be shocked if Obama comes out openly with socialist policies. Too many people, lulled by an incompetent and agenda driven MSM, actually think Obama is a “centrist”.

We are going to see if Obama is the political coward he seems to be or if he truly is a sneaking Hitlerian wolf.

Florida isn’t socialist, it’s just naive and lazy. I guess the concept,”People get the government they deserve” is going to be a ruthless mistress.

By the way, he went out with a girl tonight who said she voted for Obama. When he asked her, why, she said, I don’t know. And she seemed totally surprised by the things that were being discussed in the group of friends, like Ayers and socialism.

How do people vote FOR someone who wants to do away with DOMA and vote AGAINST gay marriage, too?

Cubans, illegals, and - sorry - blacks (that voted 0bama) all possess that mental disconnect, and they were the push over top for these amendments.

Courtesy of ACORN, Mickey Mouse voted for Obama 600,000; he didn’t care so much about the Marriage Amendment.

Thanks segment of Obama voters.

Doesn’t matter. Congress will repeal the DOMA and some judge will impose gay marriage on the whole country.

Have you ever considered that the two, three, four times a person voted, they only voted for the messiah and ignored the rest of the ballot? That’s my take on it.
ACORN only had one agenda, vote Obama and vote often!

I thought that was obvious.
Either that, or people simply don’t know why they were voting for the man.

Just a bunch of fricking sheep who are getting sick of the gays.

Goods news, and the numbers are interesting. That's a good bit fewer total votes than in the Presidential election in Florida.

There are presently over 8 million votes listed as counted in the presidential election in Florida, but this amendment garnered 5% fewer overall votes with only 7.6 million cast. 400,000 voters just ignored it?

I agree with your son 100% Most of the people and certainly all of the Republicans that voted for Obama have no idea whatsoever what they’ve done.

Did anybody actually listen to his commercials? If your weren’t paying attention (and were a little dumb) you’d think he was Reagan. He’s going to lower our taxes! He said it! Or something....

Most people didn’t vote for this guy because they thought he was Marx. They voted for him because he was pretending to run on the exact low-tax message that was a consistent winner for the GOP in the past. They will be very, very, very surprised with the reality. That is our opportunity in 2010.
