FishbowlDC has learned that U.S. News & World Report is going monthly...
In June, U.S. News moved its publishing schedule from weekly to biweekly and it's no surprise that the magazine has struggled to compete with its traditional competitors -- Time and Newsweek -- even as those magazines have had their own difficulties in this depressing journalism environment.
U.S. News has tried boosting its PR efforts, stepping up its web presence and embracing its image as the-magazine-that-makes-a-lot-of-lists.
Still, there have been plenty of layoffs and, last year, the New York Post's Keith Kelly reported that "The magazine has not made any money since the dot-com bubble burst in 2001."
An official announcement has not yet been made, although staffers were recently informed of the move.
The page count in U.S. News' monthly issues will increase (as it did when the magazine went bi-weekly) and it's likely that many of the issues will prominently feature a "Best Of" feature.
With these changes, the magazine hopes to continue its website improvement and expansion, increasingly moving its content online (you may have noticed that the magazine has already boosted its Health, Business, White House, and Opinion sections). In addition, no layoffs or firings are expected. U.S. News benefits from the fact that it has already trimmed its staff, a tough process that such competitors as Newsweek and Time are currently having to undergo.
U.S. News' renewed hopes in the online world follow on last week's news that the Christian Science Monitor would move to a digital only format, a move that some media observers think is the future of the publishing industry.

Yeah, that'll help the bottom line.
Perhaps a name change to “U. S. History and World Past?”
I subscribe to USNWR, mostly because I figured it was the least biased of the national news mags. Years ago I was a long-time subscriber...when I renewed a few months back, I could tell its bias had gotten worse.
Perhaps I’ll give “World” or “Human Events” a try.
Anyone have recommendations on those or other news mags? I like magazines because of how they can explore a subject in a bit more depth...
Translation: Future issues will largely feature Princess Dinah, Jackie O, and other celebrities and be aimed at the supermarket check-out line impulse buy market.
I can't stomach Newsweek and Time anymore, and it's nice to sit back at night in my easy chair and leaf through a magazine. (I stare at a computer screen all day at work. FR whenever I get a chance.)
In depth research is available more widely right here on FRee Republic than anywhere else in the world. Save your money that you spend on dead tree magazines and send it in to Jim Rob.
I used to be an avid US News and World Report fan AND subscriber. I was until Steve Roerts became heavily involved. I used to read it in those days and scratch my head, and ask, "What is this?" Eventually I had to drop my subscription because they printed one issue after another that struck me as a groin kick.
My guess is they haven't improved.
If our media can elect a President, they are far from being in danger of extinction.
If, (and I repeat if), Obama is elected, can we please lose the “Dinosaur Media DeathWatch” threads?

Too bad. I can’t stand Time or Newsweek.
No.
If he's elected, it will be even more important that the Drive-Bys be put out of business. I've been posting these threads since before you were a FReeper.
If you don't like them, you are under no obligation to click on them and comment.
Geez ... I can read old magazines in my doctor’s office. I don’t need to subscribe to them.
This is pretty good news. They should focus on their college ratings and such and get out of the “News” business.
They were better than Newsweek and Time, but not much better.
Good riddance to weekly relevance, U.S. News.
Boy, did I get sucked in. I just extended my subscription by letting them send their rag to two of my friends for free. I suppose they will be ex-friends now.
The only time I read US News and World is when I visit my proctologist for my annual “ballet lesson”. Monthly wastes 11 issues on me!
Annual would be better news or maybe on leap years?
I was going to say “Insight Magazine” but then I realized it had stopped publication a few months ago.
Townhall Magazine is also a very good effort, and you can take a look at Newsmax. The other old standbys are Nat Review, Weekly Standard, and Amer Spectator.
Would like to see Time and Newsweek merge next. You would have to be a nut of some kind to subscribe to both.
