Does anyone live in TX-17? Can someone explain to me why a Democrat represents a district that is R +18? A Republican with nothing more than a pulse should be able to win in this district. What gives? I'm sure there are several other districts like this out there, but this one is always on my mind.
It’s Delay’s old district. Relax. It’ll be Republican again in a few hours.
Ahh.. you are referring to Chet Edward’s district.. It has almost everything to do with Wohlgemuth was a crappy candidate in 2004 and Edwards made a big push to move Republicans to the Libertarian or to sit out.
Then, in 2006, he faced Van Taylor who was the victim of the Republican backlash (teaching Republicans a lesson).. Chet was the master at manipulating Republicans to sit out. (there where almost a hundred thousand less votes in 06 than in 04, even though the district grew in population).
No, Delay’s district is TX-22, and yes, it will be Republican after tomorrow.
However, TX-17 has been represented by a Dem for several election cycles. It encompases Waco, College Station, and mid-south Texas. A Democrat has no business representing that district.
I agree with SeeSharp. This is a solidly Republican district, but the Dems cheated (surprise!) 2 years ago when Delay was forced out just before the election. They went to court to prevent the name of the replacement Republican candidate, Shelly Secula-Gibbs, from being placed on the ballot. As a result, we all had to write-in her name with those clumbsy, turning wheel type voting machines. It took forever, and many people didn’t bother. She almost won anyway.
We ended up with one of those Blue-Dog Democtrats, Nick Lampson. He wasn’t as crazy as Pelosi, et al, and he actually had a pretty good record supporting NASA and the energy industry down here. But his time is up.
Oh, also, Chet skipped the debate in 2006 because his father was sick, taking a lot of airtime away from Van Taylor.. did I mention that Chet is an a**h***?
Who’s running against him in 2008?
Even in a bad year, the GOP should be able to win this seat. Something seriously needs to be done about candidate recruitment. We can’t afford to have districts like these represented by Democrats.
Sorry, I also was mistaken. I was describing Democrat sins in Delay’s old District 22.
Rob Curnock
Unfortunately, I when I drive through that district, I don’t see a lot of presence for him. Chet has a big warchest.
Obviously, it is too late to say donate..
Chet Edwards is an Aggie. That’s it, plain and simple.
If the GOP ever puts a decent Aggie up against him, he’s toast.
Seems like there should be plenty of conservative Aggies that would like to run against him. What gives!!
Maybe, RAT or not, he was superior to the opponents? I used to vote for a RAT congressman years ago, but he put country first, like Scoop Jackson, Zell Miller, et als.
I live in District 17. Chet may be surprised this election. He upset a lot of people with his early endorsement of BHO.
Chet Edwards boasts how pro military he is with Ft. Hood nearby in Killeen. Wonder how that is going to jive with Barney Frank saying he’s going to cut 25% of the military budget if Obama wins? I’m thinking since Edwards was inline kissing up to Obama to be his VP (was one of his earliest supporters) that it’s bound to hurt him this year.
I’ll be proud to vote Against him again! Wish the rest of the Republicans in this district would.
Chet Edwards has the more gullible in this district (and there are plenty of them) convinced that he saved the Waco VA Hospital from closing single handedly, and that there is nothing he wouldn’t do for the military. Before this district was redrawn he also represented Fort Hood. He’s brought federal research money into Baylor University which is akin to walking on water in Waco. He plays the local publicity game very well. I think he’s congressman for life — the Republicans haven’t found a good strong candidate to run against him.
Chet Edwards is such a lapdog for Queen Nancy Pelosi that she was pushing for him to be Obama’s Veep. Then he comes back to his district and brags about all the pork he’s funneled to A&M, his alma mater, and what a great friend he is to the military(Ft. Hood is in his district)...even though he voted for every one of Queen Nancy’s surrender-date-certain bills. He is a sickening phony that anyone but an Aggie could see through. And he told outrageous lies in his TV ads against Curnock, a GOP businessman from Waco.
Edwards won with some 58% of the vote in 06...... However in 02 & 04 he won with less than 52% in both elections. For some reason Taylor didn’t do very well against him last time but I have no idea why. This maybe a district that is fairly evenly split D/R in the last redistricting.
