West Virginia Gov. Sides with Obama on 'Bankrupting' Industry

The revelation that Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama would bankrupt the coal industry “for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted,” has prompted harsh reaction from various pro-coal constituencies. But the governor of one coal state welcomed the promise.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, a Democrat, appeared on CNBC’s Nov. 3 “Power Lunch” to discuss the effects the presidential election would have on the economy. He told co-anchor Trish Regan that despite anti-coal remarks Obama made to the San Francisco Chronicle on Jan. 17, the Democrats’ presidential candidate “understands” the nation’s energy woes.

“Basically he understands this country must become secure,” Manchin said. “We should not be dependent on foreign oil. In order to do that, we got to use all of our resources. Coal’s going to be a major factor for next 20, 30 or more years. But we have a responsibility to clean it up.”

“Basically he understands this country must become secure,” Manchin said. “We should not be dependent on foreign oil”

Again, not what Obama was talking about. He was not talking about energy independence, diversity.

He was talking about CO2 and Carbon Cap and Trade markets

West Virginia should pay attention and consider this next election if this bozo is up for re-election.

Gov. Joe Manchin is translating what Obama said so that he, Joe Manchin, doesn't look so much like a total idiot for supporting Obama.

Doesn't work. Obama has decided that West Virginia and its people must be punished.

I'd start practicing for standing up to the lash Joe!

Manchin is an ass ... he’s also up for re-election (or, hopefully, rejection) this year.

Amazing. Simply amazing. Manchin’s head must be so far up Barak’s *ss that the only thing still visible is his feet. How else do you explain this?

Manchin will be re-elected no matter what he says. Despite VW going red the last couple of Prez elections, the GOP can’t seem to field any viable gubernatorial candidates.

Basically, DemoRATs think they fool all of the people, all of the time. I know West Virginia is going to be a landslide for McCain, I hope that carries over to PA, OH and VA. I also hope it takes WV’s idiot governor out as well.

He’s obviously relying on the fact that there isn’t enough time before the election to uncover his lie, especially with all the media helping him. He’s probably right.

But we have a responsibility to clean it up.

Help me out here. Does "clean coal" not emit CO2 when it burns?

Great job, Joe. if you were smart you would have said, “That’s not the Barak Hussein Obama I know.”

BTW, WV’s two Senators and two of our three Representatives agree with him.

CO2 can theoretically be captured but it is very expensive.
