McCain Rally: Salter Is Smiling
Washington Times ^ | 11/03/08 | Elizabeth Holmes

You know it’s a big day on the McCain campaign when Mark Salter is smiling. The senior aide to John McCain, known for his gruff demeanor, was practically giddy this morning on the campaign plane. He was cracking jokes with reporters and describing an optimistic atmosphere surrounding McCain. “We feel like we’ve been saying all week. We’re well within the margin or on top in all these battlegrounds,” Salter said. “We got a real good shot at catching the guy.”

Compare this with Rick Davis comments yesterday, ..

Either the McCain Campaign is seeing something very good in their internals. Or they are passing around some good drugs.

Timing is everything.

You only need to lead by a few votes for one day.

McCain may peak at just the perfect moment.

If you want good drugs, I suggest you make the trip to 0bamapalooza in Grant Park tomorrow.

But seriously, they know something we don’t.

You know, I saw a portion of the Hussein speech in Jacksonville, Florida today. Hussein did not look happy, upbeat or pleased. ON the contrary, he looked very very serious/unhappy/morose. Perhaps he knows the great charade may come crashing down on him and his cult.

We’ll see.

When asked how he was planning to get through the marathon seven-state day, Salter quipped: “Crystal meth. Me, personally, that’s how I’m going to do it.”

I don't doubt it. This guy sounds oddly "edgy" for someone representing the GOP.

Interesting post about Nevada at NRO about Obama losing lots of early voting Dems to McCain (if the poll is correct):

“Nevada political consultant Steve Nathan has e-mailed with his latest polling results of those who have voted early in Nevada.

Their final results of calling everyone who voted early in the state put Obama ahead, 51.63 percent to 45.51 percent, with 2.87 percent going to other candidates.

Nathan predicts, “Rural areas of Nevada will be heavily favoring McCain, but with 46 percent of the statewide vote already in we doubt he will be able to gain enough support to overcome Obama’s lead in this race. Obama will win Nevada by a narrow margin.”

I’ve asked Nathan for the partisan breakdown and total samples size – last we heard, it was more than 12,000. I hestiate before contradicting the guy on the ground, but I think that McCain still has an excellent shot if this sample reflects the overall makeup of the voters that state figures indicate:

“The ballots from early and absentee voters in Clark County show 51-percent of more than 431-thousand votes were cast by Democrats and 32-percent were from Republicans. According to the secretary of state’s office, more than 600-thousand votes had been cast statewide by Friday. Numbers from Washoe County show 38-percent of the votes came from Republicans, while 45-percent were cast by Democrats.”

Clark County includes Las Vegas and Washoe County includes Reno; together they make up 88 percent of the state’s population. If every other early voter in the state was Republican, the Democrats would still have an early voter advantage of about 2 percent in the state overall. If the early voters in the other counties split roughly along the lines of party registration, then the Democratic advantage in the statewide early voting electorate is 48.5 percent to 35.4 percent.

If Nathan’s numbers are right, Obama leads by 6.12 percent in a voter pool that is about 13.1 percent more Democrats than Republicans. That would make me nervous if I were an Obama supporter, as it indicates more than a few pro-McCain Democrats casting ballots out there. If the Nevada Republicans show up and narrow that partisan breakdown to anything resembling the statewide party registration numbers – a 7 percent Democrat margin – McCain should be able to eke out a narrow victory.”

Salter is peppering me up.

Actually I don’t need pepping up, I have been expecting a Mac win ever since he named the wonderful Sarah Palin as his veep.

Sometimes this stuff is just bluster.

But, it doesn’t seem like it this time.

Not necessarily anymore.......in some states early voting will be half the total.

But, I get your point.

Interesting. This is not the sort of thing that one can easily fake. You don’t pour blood, sweat and tears into something this important and then conjure up convincing giddiness and confidence if you believe that you’re going to lose.

What were his comments yesterday and why do they conflict with Salter's?

But not for someone who's been working 100+ hour weeks for months. These guys have got to be exhausted... just the thrill of it being almost over has got to make them giddy.

You know, I thought the very same thing when I saw Obama’s Jacksonville speech this morning. Funny you saw it too. He looked unhappy, very serious, very worn down. He did not look like someone who had this thing all wrapped up. On the other hand, I watched McCain’s midnight rally last night in Miami and he was fired up and looked enthusiastic and energetic.

Just talked to a co-worker from Southern New Hampshire (which is supposed to be Blue) he spoke with 5 neighbors who are democrats and are all going to vote for McCain.

Reasons: Spread the Wealth, Joe the Plumber, his arrogance, and kicking conservative newpapers out of his campaign.
