Daughter of slave votes for Obama
Austin American-Statesman ^ | October 27, 2008 | Joshunda Sanders

Amanda Jones, 109, the daughter of a man born into slavery, has lived a life long enough to touch three centuries. And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years, she has voted early for the country's first black presidential nominee.

The middle child of 13, Jones, who is African American, is part of a family that has lived in Bastrop County for five generations. The family has remained a fixture in Cedar Creek and other parts of the county, even when its members had to eat at segregated barbecue dives and walk through the back door while white customers walked through the front, said Amanda Jones' 68-year-old daughter, Joyce Jones.

For at least a decade, Amanda Jones worked as a maid for $20 a month, Joyce Jones said. She was a housewife for 72 years and helped her now-deceased husband, C.L. Jones, manage a store.

Amanda Jones, a delicate, thin woman wearing golden-rimmed glasses, giggled as the family discussed this year's presidential election. She is too weak to go the polls, so two of her 10 children — Eloise Baker, 75, and Joyce Jones — helped her fill out a mail-in ballot for Barack Obama, Baker said. "I feel good about voting for him," Amanda Jones said.

Jones' father herded sheep as a slave until he was 12, according to the family, and once he was freed, he was a farmer who raised cows, hogs and turkeys on land he owned. Her mother was born right after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Joyce Jones said. The family owned more than 100 acres of land in Cedar Creek at one point, she said.

And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years,

So she's been a Democrat since the days they were the party of Jim Crown and the Klan?

LOL!

Oh, she’s a slave all right. Voting for the party of slavery and the KKK; for a Nazi socialist whose beloved paternal tribe in Kenya was a key player in capturing and selling slaves before, during and after the slave period in America.

If McCain had any decency, he would drop out of the race today.

I guess someone forgot to tell her that Obama’s ancestors were the ones selling her ancestors into slavery.

Not likely. Obama's African ancestors are from East Africa, whereas hers are from the West.

If Obama's ancestors included slave-traders, probable if you go back far enough, they sold slaves to Muslim Arabs who exported them to the Middle East. There the males were generally castrated and the females used as drudge labor. In very few cases were they allowed to have children.

Thus, despite the fact that more blacks over the centuries were shipped to the Middle East than across the Atlantic, few of their descendants are found there today.

I bet Obama gets 100% of the vote among those who are 120+ years old. I think this makes up 30-40% of the Dhim voting block in some precincts.

Thank you for making that point!

Can someone please tell me where the Republican party became the “racist” party? I wasn't alive yet in the 60’s (Civil Rights, MLK, etc.) however, wasn't it the REPUBLICAN party that made the Jim Crow laws unconstitutional and played a huge roll in passing Civil Rights legislation? Oh, and Lincoln, being the first Republican president headed the North during that little skirmish between 1861-1865 against DEMOCRATIC SLAVE OWNERS!

Or does it boil down to the fact that the Democratic party buys its’ voters, including a large percentage of Blacks? Oh, they “buy” their voters with OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!

Am I missing something?

Her mother was born right after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Joyce Jones said.

The daughter either needs to learn her history or how to do math.

"Right after", to me, means a few years ~ not decades.

Democrats in MA are still segregationists... BUT they call it gentrification.

MA Democrats in the People's Republic of Cambridge mostly send their kids to private school. For that matter, about 50% of MA children attend private school while minorities and illegal aliens' kids fill up the city public schools.

Not accurate.

Sanger campaigned for birth control, not legalized abortion.

I’m no fan of hers, but the organization she founded has been perverted from her original intent.

I’m really sad about the things this woman and her family suffered through.

Her family owned a 100-acre farm.

Nobody ever told her that it was a Republican who emancipated the slaves.

"I’m really sad about the things this woman and her family suffered through."

"Her family owned a 100-acre farm."

Can you not at least admit that being a SLAVE, or coming from a family who had been slaves, would be a horrible thing?
They may have a 100 acre farm NOW, but that wasn't always the case.
Slavery is a national scar and it always will be.

From slave to wanna-be slave in one lifetime. Pathetic.
