St. Olaf professor steals McCain signs
The Minneapolis Star and Tribune ^ | 11/01/08 | Associated Press

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - A professor has confessed on a national blog to stealing Republican presidential campaign signs in southern Minnesota.

Philip Busse wrote about the thefts on Huffington Post, a liberal news Web site and blog in a post dated Thursday. He is a visiting professor in the theater department at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

In the article titled "Confessions of a Lawn Sign Stealer," Busse admits to stealing seven McCain/Palin lawn signs along Hwy. 19 near St. Olaf.

In an e-mail to the Northfield News, Busse expressed remorse, saying it was "immature and impetuous." He says he is disappointed most readers have focused on the thefts and not the larger issues of his writing.

The Northfield Police Department says stealing political yard signs is treated as a misdemeanor, but complainants rarely decide to pursue charges.

I’m going to confess something, it really isn’t very nice but at the time it was hilarious.

It was post-election and some friends of mine were at a convention. They were all small business owners and one amongst them had supported Kerry/Edwards and still had a sticker. One of the guys actually had an unused Bush sticker and they snuck out and put it over his Kerry sticker.

Every time they drove anywhere they laughed their heads off and all wished that they could be there when he discovered it.

This is the kind of human garbage we pay tens of thousands of dollars to ‘educate’ our children! God Help Us! Parents make sure that your children are armoured in morality, decency and a love of country before you send them to those hell holes of indoctrination that we call colleges and universities.

I would press charges in a heartbeat!!!!!!
The left freak socialists always talk about respect and the common man. The common man hates a thief and knows a liar when they see one.
This moron isn't worried about anything except imposing his line of crap on others by any legal or illegal means at hand. He seems to think he is above the law. I would press charges and insist that the laws come down on him like a ton of bricks.
He is a thief and should be treated as one.

Ummmm...shouldn't he be teaching instead of stealing????

He's probably getting a lot of sympathy in the faculty lounge.

Guess this professor at this liberal ELCA school did not learn his Ten Commandments.

No, he learned the Ten Suggestions. He accepts (depending on the situation) up to seven of them.

so resorting to petty theft and squashing someone’s freedom of speech is the way he goes about things? Sounds like your typical Obot.

This is the main reason our cities seem to be void of
McCain/Palin signs altogether. We won’t lower ourselves to
steal their signs. They will not only steal signs, but van-
dalize our cars and property. Freakin’ animals.

As might be predicted, the students have more class, civility, and wisdom than their petty professors. This from a Northfield blog site:

: The St. Olaf student referred to in post #10 whose grade was marked down by Busse has responded to him in the comments following the Huffington Post article Griff linked to above. He wrote:

“Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to find out that my mass media professor, Phil Busse, was courteous enough to include me in his article:

“Earlier this term, I marked down a student’s grade for wearing an Obama T-shirt when he gave a presentation about talk radio’s impact on the current election. I told him that the T-shirt made his presentation look biased and detracted from his otherwise sincere analysis of Rush Limbaugh.”

How could I forget, Phil? You made quite an impression on me with your flagrant disregard for free speech, especially coming from journalist, one whose livelihood is wholly and totally dependent on the protections of the first amendment. I don’t mean to be bitter, but this irritates me as much as anyone. Displaying a McCain / Palin sign on one’s own property and wearing a shirt supporting Barack Obama are both form of free expression that harm nobody. What is harmful is this sort of childish and whimsical caprice exhibited by Mr. Busse as a representative of St. Olaf College. Grading thoughtlessly based on my t-shirt rather than the informational content of the presentation and openly admitting to trespassing and thievery are not qualities to be associated with any fine academic institution, public or private.

Maybe I’ll follow Phil’s lead. Maybe instead of just talking, I’ll take action - like sending a copy of this article to the Dean of Students.

Steven J Benton
St. Olaf ‘12

Kudos to Steven J Benton, who is much wiser than the dorky, thieving Professor Busse. If Olaf holds their employees to any standards at all, Busse’s office should be emptied, first thing Monday am.

And if one were looking for the nadir of professorial inanity, Busse reaches it in this solipsistic excuse:

"If I need to justify my actions, I could argue that I was trying to achieve some great public service for rural voters. In his 2004 book, What’s The Matter With Kansas, Frank Rich explains that working class and family farmers, like these in Minnesota, increasingly vote conservative and against their own interests. By pulling out the McCain signs, I was hoping to curb the impression for passing motorists that family farmers in Minnesota supported McCain. Or, at least that’s the most high-minded explanation that I can offer."

Teaching what - theater? This kind of weenie would starve to death in a real economy and he knows it. Stealing signs is his inner child acting impulsively with the body of his outer child. In other words, normal.
