Hanging Chads Plus 8, Voting Mishaps Continue

Retired bank president Christine Jennings of Sarasota, Fla., is optimistic about her chances in the 13th District congressional race.

Polls show her ahead, but she is worried about those electronic voting machines that a third of the country is using this year.

"There are too, too many things that can go wrong with them," she told "20/20."

She's skeptical because two years ago, Jennings ran for and lost the same congressional seat. She got the most votes, but the machines in her hometown recorded thousands of ballots that registered no vote on election night.

She lost by a razor-thin margin.
"We were horrified," Jennings said, "because it was so obvious that something was wrong."

The Mess That HAVA Created

The Rev. DeForest Soaries was the first chairman of the Election Assistance Commission, an agency created after Florida's 2000 hanging chad fiasco.

"It's the fault of a system run by, essentially, the federal government, which has failed to invest properly in democracy," he said.

The mess in Florida led to a lot of plans, laws and agencies meant to prevent reoccurrences. In addition to the EAC, the federal government passed the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to replace punch-card voting systems and create uniform administration standards.

Um, is she "interpreting the will of the voters" or what?

Wow, another DEMOCRAT whining about the same electronic machines that they mandated after their own voters were too stupid to figure out the paper ballots in 2000.

If this isn’ proof that the Democrats’ primary goal is to invalidate the democratic process, I don’t know what is. If they win, it’s legit, and if they lose, they use their hatred of the US to rally people to invalidate the process.

You know how you get "Dimpled" and "Hanging" chads?

Trying to punch 50 cards at once.

Polls show her ahead? Another article I read said the GOP incumbent was not expected to have any trouble. I sure hope that is the case. What is wrong with FL this year?? Rep Feeney and one other incumbent were thought to be in trouble. At least they should pick up the Mahoney seat.

The idiot “Reverend” apparently doesn’t realize that the “system” is not run by the federal government. Elections are handled by the states and even there are usually broken down on a county basis, with counties selecting their own technologies.

We have a very good system with a counter that displays the recording of the ballot, which is a paper form that the voter marks and then slides into the scanner. If the voter has voted for more than one candidate for an office, the ballot is rejected and the voter has to vote again.

Of course, people are the wild card in this. For some reason, we have something like 9 pairs of presidential candidates on our ballot this year. One lady earlier in the week voted for all of them. Naturally, the machine rejected her ballot and she was told she had to pick only one. But I can’t imagine what she thought she was doing.

Well they’re essentially lowering the bar to sue and challenge when they don’t win. This is not what we were set up for in the constitution. They’re so in-bed with these lawyers that they’re looking at an election as something you can appeal if you lose. Unbelievable to me. I love how they send lawyers to the polls, as if that’s supposed to comfort us?

How could she lose if she got the most votes? Also the story goes onto say how Obama votes turned to McCain votes I read an article which talked about early voting problems in Florida and it mentioned about the claim Obama votes were changed to McCain but it also happened when McCain was selected it gave a vote to Obama they said it was because the machine needed to be calibrated. Anyway I think this will be the new chad if McCain wins they will say the votes were not registered correctly they will have phone banks set up to call if you have any problems and try to create an issue. I do not like the new electronic machines my self but the politicians just had to have them.

The third of the country she is worried about doesn't vote in her district.

I live in Sarasota which is part of the area that this *itch wants to represent. This is the first report I’ve heard that purports the *itch to be ahead. Like that dead Rep from Kali said to Gen. Patraeus: I don’t buy eet.
