With the election finally coming to a close, we asked readers for their opinion one last time. The survey closed yesterday. The vast majority of those responding (99%!) indicated that they will be voting or have already voted in the early voting allowed in some states.

In this unusual election, reader preference has now shifted back to Senator McCain. By a margin of 5%, readers expressed a preference for McCain over Obama. Here is a quick summary of the results.

Federal employees? Seems odd. But, don’t a lot of those live in northern Virginia?

From the article:

A federal retiree from Shawnee Mission, Kansas has a strong opinion: "Obama talks the talk, although the talk clearly includes raising taxes, redistributing wealth (says he will "spread it around", -- isn't this clearly socialism?), and sitting down with terrorists, rather, apparently, than trying to defend us against them. He would take away our weapons, both those controlled by our military, as well as those owned by private citizens. In the extremely small amount of time he has been an elected official, he has taken more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than almost anyone else in Congress...."

I would imagine it is because they don’t need the work overload with the expansion of an Obama government. Plus.....lots more work and a lot less pay. Just a guess.

Federal employees are scattered all over the place but tend to work in about 10 big cities (let’s see—D.C., Denver, SF, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle).

I think this poll of feds (not scientific, but interesting) may have included some of retired military, and feds are a rapidly aging group (aren’t we all). Maybe they are getting less Dem these days. Once can hope.

They must be talking about Federal employees in a parallel universe.

This is shocking: federal employees (N = 3531) responding to this magazine's poll prefer McCain to Obama 51-46. When I worked in DC 25 years ago, federal employees were, by and large, a very reliable voting bloc for Democrats.

Interesting. It is true that there are a lot of retired military in federal jobs, but also a lot of people who view the Dems as their ticket to more job security.

Interesting indeed.

I don’t find it odd...my hubby is a retired federal employee...39 years service which includes time served with the United States Air Force...1964-1968...he is very conservative and has voted republican since he was old enough to vote...we don’t live anywhere in Virginia either...:)

Take a look at this October snippet from 2004:

http://www.fedsmith.com/article/358/

“And, in the biggest turnaround in our poll, 55% of those responding said they would vote for John Kerry. 37% said they would vote for George Bush. 7% were undecided and the remainder were split between Ralph Nader and “other.”

Friends we have an impending shocking landslide on our hands for John McCain. If Federal employees are flipping for McCain after going so strong for Kerry in 04, what does that tell us about the national race. We are talking about a lot of DC crowd in this poll!
