RNC, GOP tweak tactics to lure conservative Democrats
CNN ^ | October 30, 2008 | Stuart Rothenberg and Nathan L. Gonzales

While many in the media are single-mindedly focused on vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's outfits, Republican efforts to brand Sen. Barack Obama a socialist and the chances that Democrats will net nine Senate seats (giving them 60 seats in the next Senate), some other interesting things are going on -- things that are being missed.

One of those is an unreported major Republican National Committee radio buy in eight key states: Colorado, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

The buy is interesting because it...

--snip--

The ad, which is part of the RNC's Independent Expenditure campaign that has been run by OnMessage Inc., a Republican media, polling and strategy firm, raises an issue that some strategists believe has mistakenly been underplayed by the McCain campaign.

"If Barack Obama becomes president, your Second Amendment right to defend yourself could be in danger. In fact, in Illinois, Obama voted to prosecute law-abiding citizens who used a gun to defend themselves or their families," says a narrator in the RNC spot.

"Obama supports local governments to ban guns," the radio ad continues. "Obama wants to license and register gun owners. Obama opposes judges who protect our Second Amendment right."

The ad, which is airing on stations that have a variety of formats, isn't being run in major markets (such as Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri), but is being aired heavily in rural areas and smaller markets (such as Joplin, Springfield and Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for example).

The spot's message surely will resonate with conservative Republicans and could help with turnout among those partisans. But the major target audience appears to be conservative Democrats, many of whom have leaned toward Obama recently because of economic fears and uncertainty but surely are closer to the GOP's positions on cultural issues.

They're trying to reach Reagan Democrats. The culturally conservative and economically liberal voters. God, guns and patriotism speak to these people.

Need more of these type of ads for abortion too. Obama’s stance on abortion should alienate most catholics.

What is unusual about this, appealing to 'Reagan' Democrats who are concerned about their 2nd Amendment rights?

And the Democrats are not going to pick up 9 Senate seats.

I hope the GOP realizes that their best bet is a guerrilla campaign.

Look, the other dude has had $150 million left to play with. The Media is in the tank for him. You have $40 million maybe.

Guerrilla tactics like the one mentioned in this article are your only way to pull this out. You do have to slip under their radar.

Nice. Go after the folks Obama has disowned and mocked. There are a lot of these Hillary Democrats out there. Hey Barack, the college kids who are easily snowed by your likeness don’t tend to vote that much. But the bitter rural typical white person gun and religion clingers do.

Just getting the anti-Socialist Dems would give McCain victory.

Greatest mistakes of McCain’s campaign so far has been the failure to pin Obama on his gun positions during the debates. It didn’t come up.. He should of picked a spot to bring it up!

The last 72 hours strategy. McCain is betting he can carpet bomb the battleground states and attack Obama on several fronts with a massive ad buy targeted to different pockets and issues from guns to Wright/ayers et al, to taxes etc etc.

This strategy does a couple of things. One it allowed them to save their money and “ammo” to the end, where it will be effective at making people reconsider the Zero. Secondly it comes so late in the game that Obama and the MSM will have a hard time countering it. The MSM is bumbling around on this LA Times tape. I now think the absence of the tape is worth more than the tape itself. Like the scary thing in your closet you can’t see is scarier than reality.

If it works, Obama won’t know what hit him until Nov. 5th.

McCain’s people have consistently said they believe strongly in the last 3 days theory.

Everything is falling into place for my landslide prediction, I don’t plan on eating crow.

You're kidding, right? A McCain landslide isn't in the cards but a decent win looks quite promising, indeed.

The last 72 hours strategy.

I've heard Limbaugh mention that McCain believes this election will be decided in the last 72 hours and he's been keeping his powder dry until then.

McCain’s people have consistently said they believe strongly in the last 3 days theory.

I don't doubt that, but it's uncomfortably similar to Rudy Giuliani's "wait until Super Tuesday" strategy.

Not kidding at all, you’ve got the PC effect on the polling, tons of democrats defecting, etc.

Obama’s support is a mile wide and an inch deep, I still think any state that Bush lost by 5% or less could flip.

Your tape theory makes sense but if the tape contains the Obama’s clapping as anti Israel statements are being made, and if it contains Ayers seated next to Obama, I would much rather have it made public.

That’s apples and oranges, there’s only 2 candidates and unlike Obama McCain has limited money.

It’s more similar to the Iraq “surge” strategy, which was wildly successful ; )

It must be working - there have been stories on national and local news all over the country this week about a spike in gun sales. And Obama has been forced to include a promise not to take our guns away in his speeches in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.
