WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.
Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are - beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them:
THE SPIN: "That's why my health care plan includes improving information technology, requires coverage for preventive care and pre-existing conditions and lowers health care costs for the typical family by $2,500 a year."
THE FACTS: His plan does not lower premiums by $2,500, or any set amount. Obama hopes that by spending $50 billion over five years on electronic medical records and by improving access to proven disease management programs, among other steps, consumers will end up saving money. He uses an optimistic analysis to suggest cost reductions in national health care spending could amount to the equivalent of $2,500 for a family of four. Many economists are skeptical those savings can be achieved, but even if they are, it's not a certainty that every dollar would be passed on to consumers in the form of lower premiums.

Now that the reciept has been debunked as fake, it is clear that internet copies of documents are unreliable and easy to fake.....sort of like a birth certificate.
Yes, the receipt is fake and the NY Post retracted the story behind it. Apparently Michelle Obama was not even in New York at that time.
Again, I don’t care. I’m tired of standing in pretty lines with bright red jackets while the animals on the Left do everthing they can to destroy this country. If this perfectly believable “urban legend” wins votes and SAVES this country from a Marxist, so be it. My honor is less important than keeping an EVIL man who doesn’t give a damn about children who survive an abortion out of power.
I read the AP story last night on the web. It was not on the front page of my newspaper this morning.
The New York Post political reporters (pro Obama all the time) and two infomercial specialists they questioned panned it.
Actually Bill Clinton promised universal health care for everyone, a middle class tax cut and a balanced budget. Lies, lies, lies, lies, nothing but lies, Axelrod simply took a page from Slick’s 1992 playbook.
I just love how people think that pulling the troops out of Iraq is going to save so much money. You are still going to have to supply and house and feed those troops where ever they are, and you are still going to have to pay them. He's planning on moving troops to Afganistan, what will that cost?
Bambi prevaricates, smoke and mirrors, tell ‘em what they want to hear........abrcadabra......the wizard of oz.......
Ontie found by British press, not by American press many of whom live in Boston and surrounds..........no, why look in your own frickin backyard for the obvious.
Sorry AP, it's too little too late.
LOL, oh well. I’m pretty sure you won’t see them at McD’s though :)
Actually, It was submitted to the NY Post and when they went to verify it, it was wrong in many ways, including the item prices.
Heh. The numbers would only matter if they had any intent to do it. This is pure prolefeed.
Bill Clinton promised a middle class tax cut in 1992. The middle class got a tax hike in 1993.

Great post!
She was in NY, though. Why do you think she was not in NY at the time of the receipt?
According to a number of previous articles she was giving a speech in Indiana that afternoon. Factcheck.org has now updated their page on this to say that she did come to New York that evening but had not arrived until after the time of the receipt and did not stay at the Waldorf.
Of course they do credit the Obama campaign with this information, but assuming Michelle Obama gave a speech at 1 PM in Fort Wayne, Indiana and concluded by 2 PM, I do not thing it is believable that she could travel 600 miles to New York, drive into downtown Manhattan, check into her hotel and sign the receipt for her room service all in the space of two hours.
As for the receipt, it is an obvious hoax. Besides the fact that the two signatures are identical, people on FR were changing the numbers on the receipt even after if was first posted.
They are counting on you!
ha! the time on the fake receipt! Now we’re using the fake evidence to disprove the hoax.
BTW, Factcheck is a project of the Annenberg Foundation, just as ACORN is.
Not everything is a conspiracy. There are plenty of other independent sources for this information, some of which are linked to in the factcheck article.
As for whether this incident occurred, the Post has retracted the story and someone on here said that Murdoch had even apologized for it.
As for the Annenberg Foundation, I don't think that it is necessarily true that anything connected with this foundation is bad or that "ACORN is a project of the Annenberg Foundation" especially as ACORN was founded nearly two decades before the foundation.
