Shippensburg students demonstrate for Obama

Students for Barack Obama held an "Unwelcome Wagon" demonstration when vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin rolled onto Shippensburg University's campus Tuesday.

A handful of students and alumni lifted signs and cheered for Barack Obama while thousands of John McCain supporters lined up across the street for hours, waiting to see Palin speak in Heiges Field House.

(snip)

The pro-Obama gathering was small when it began around noon but had grown into a small mob by the end of the rally, peaking at around 50 naysayers at 4:30 p.m. to include non-students as well.

I was there and saw it all first hand. The Obama protestors were pitiful, mostly students, but some older folks as well, numbering forty altogether at the most.

Curiously, one of them was dressed all in black, with a ski-mask, and held a sign that read: "Free Ireland---Support the IRA", an infamous terrorist organization. Another protestor held a sign that said "Forget oil! I want to drill Sarah!" Apparently someone told him to get lost lest the Secret Service misinterpret his sign, so he disappeared after a few minutes.

And of course, the local media focused most of its attention of this motley crew while ignoring the half-mile long line of people extending into thje distance, shivering in the blustery cold yet determined to see Governor Palin.

The handful of protestors got first billing rather than the many thousands who were there to support Sarah.

Well if 40-50 losers is a “small mob”, then the thousands lined up to see Sarah Palin would be correctly characterized as an overwhelming throng.

But then, we cannot expect the propagandists in the LeftMedia to provide proper perspective now, can we?.

There were atcually a couple of Obama student supporters who were marching up and down the line trying to register new voters (or at least it appeared that way to me). Very bizarre!

I saw the same student apathy for the Marxist Onada at both William and Mary University and Penn State last week and over the weekend. No buzz for the Messiah. \

To be fair there was not much McCain buzz either. But the point is, it lends the lie to the dem’s and MSM’s message that The Messiah may be headed for a landslide victory.

I know if Gov. Palin made an appearance at Texas A&M University's campus in College Station (aka God's country)... she would easily draw 80,000+. Let all the bleeding heart, socialist-loving Dimocraps eat cake.

We got your back McCain/Palin... keep fighting the good fight!

Honestly, I think the Obama supporters had every right to be there. You can’t knock those kids just because they were demonstrating.

Have any of you held a “welcoming committee” for an opponent when they have come to your town? I’m sure many of you have, and you are commended for it.

I have had the opportunity to be a part of it this election cycle. In fact, I was part of a “welcoming committee” when former Pres. Bill Clinton spoke at a local college in support of Obama. We were a small group and we had every right to be there. We stood there with our plungers and held our signs. I was there and I was excercising my right to free speech. I think more people should’ve been there too. We conservatives don’t speak up enough.

I understand that the line to see Sarah Palin is the big news story for that town, but that is the biased media doing the reporting. I stood in a long line to see Sarah Palin recently, and it was energizing. Our stupid newspaper covered the story terribly, just as expected.

Read William McGurn’s piece in today’s Wall Street Journal. In it he quotes someone who says going forward it is likely the Boomers will be voting higher taxes on themselves to assure their Social Security and Medicare in retirement. These higher taxes will mainly burden today’s young for many decades (3-4). Funny, vote Obama and higher taxes today and you kids will be burdened for a long time. Wonder how many election cycles it will take them before the idea of “spreading the wealth” doesn’t work so well. Not only are we pitting rich against poor with this redistribution nonsense but are soon to be pitting generation against generation. And how might the younger generation “solve” some of that problem? Maybe euthanasia. Maybe then the pro-choice boomers will come to regret their past stands.

Although they may have the 1st amendment right to be there, their presence is not welcome. This is a McCain/Palin political campaign rally. By being there they are rude, insensitive, disruptive and obnoxious. How would they feel if 40-50 Conservatives showed up at an Obama rally and were disruptive. They would be ticked, and I imagine the thousands that are there at this rally are ticked. If you don’t like McCain/Palin or you’re so enthralled with Obama you can’t see straight, then go to his rallies. They are not invited nor welcome!

One of our earliest patriots said “I may not agree with what you say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it”. One of my objections to Obama is the obvious curtailment of free speech. This is all the demonstrating horde of tens were doing. Exercising their right under the First Amendment. Ironic that if their candidate prevails, it might be their last such demonstration.

I see no difference between this peaceful protest and a FReep. I’m sure the opposition did not greet the FReepers with open arms and glad smiles.

At least they’re not the “timid souls who know neither victory or defeat” Theodore Roosevelt wrote about in his Arena speech.

Just my 2 baht

Although they may have the 1st amendment right to be there, their presence is not welcome.

Which is kind of the point of the 1st Amendment. People who present a popular message do not need the protection of the 1st Amendment. The 1st Amendment is meant to protect unpopular and minority views.
