Clerk charged for Joe the Plumber records search
An Oct. 28 Toledo Police Department news release stated Toledo Police Records Clerk Julie McConnell, has been charged with “Gross Misconduct” for allegedly making an improper inquiry into a state database in search of information pertaining to Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16.
The record inquiry was made for a non-law enforcement purpose, which is a violation of both department policy and state policy governing the use of the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) database, according to the news release.
McConnell was hired by the Toledo Police Department in April 1995. She is assigned to the Investigative Services Bureau and is a member of AFSCME Local 7.
Consistent with the bargaining agreement, a disciplinary hearing will be scheduled within the next ten days on a date and time mutually agreed upon by the City AFSCME Local 7.
Police Chief Mike Navarre said a member of the media, whom he would not name, asked McConnell to verify an address, and because the request was for a non-law enforcement matter, her searching computer records violated regulations.

End result is that Joe the Plumber sealed Ohio for McCain. Average Americans won’t take this sort of smear on an average citizen playing ball with his son lightly.

Smearing him was bad enough. Illegally using law enforcement is much, much worse. I think in the back of people’s minds many are thinking...if this is what they are doing to a plumber who asks a question about a candidate...imagine what they will do to anyone who resists when they are in power!

Agreed. I’d have my lawyer take the city, the perp’s union, and the perp apart like a toddler with a Tinkertoy set. They’d each be lucky if they had a toothbrush of their own when my guy got done.

This stinks to high hell. Verify an address? There are dozens of legal ways any media outlet could have verified Joe’s address.

You got that right. This “clerk” can’t be a very bright individual. She knows or should have known that a record is kept in the database of everyone who accesses those records. I imagine the union will give her another job. Probably taking down Obama signs after the election.
I hate to be so harsh but this woman should be fired.
She most likely made a quick 50 bucks for the data.

Now that I think about it, yes. They've been digging on Joe since this caught traction with the people, brought up the license, the lien, etc. I love rival newspapers, the Free Press will love to put the Blade's face in this.
