Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates Arizona Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have pulled most of their campaign efforts out of Michigan.
Pollsters have all but given Michigan to Democratic presidential candidate Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and vice presidential candidate Delaware Sen. Joe Biden.
Just when it looked like the odds were all but gone, Republican supporters across the state have found some new energy, thanks to "The Stop Obama Tour" and Our Country Deserves Better political action committee.
The bus made a stop in Battle Creek on Monday, and about 50 people filled the Republican Victory Center on Beckley Road.
Mark Williams, a talk radio host, newspaper columnist and Fox News analyst from Sacramento, Calif., led the rally.
"If you're not going to give up, we're not going to give up," he told the cheering crowd. "We're going to send John McCain and Sarah Palin to the White House."
Williams said Obama's inexperienced and "socialist ideals" about wealth and taxes made him the wrong choice for president.
Instead, Williams said, McCain's service to his country and his willingness to put his country first are what Americans need.
"(McCain) is a man who's asking you for one more chance to serve his country," he said. "He's not saying he's entitled to it, he's asking, and God knows he's earned our ear."
Deborah Johns, mother of U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. William Johns, also stumped for McCain on Monday.
As a military mom, Johns said she wants McCain to be president. His service and understanding of what it means to serve will ensure the troops' best interests are served in Washington.
Obama already has been challenged twice and has failed both times, Johns said, because he went to college "and wrote two books about himself" instead of enlisting during the first Gulf War, and then when he didn't issue a statement after Russia invaded Georgia but instead vacationed in Hawaii.
"I'm not and we're not going to give him the opportunity to fail a third time," Johns said. "We have eight days to go, and I am confident that with your help, we can deliver John and Sarah."
Scott Durham, Calhoun County GOP chairman, said the rally proves there's still some excitement left among McCain supporters in Michigan.
"These people are energized. They're going to go out and talk to people and remind people there's still an election," he said. "No matter what the papers say, no matter what they see on television, we still have a chance to stand up with John McCain and Sarah Palin on November 4."

"Barack and socialism? No, our country deserves better," implored Mark Williams.
Mark Williams addresses the rallyIt was only a few minutes into the October 22 rally staged by Our Country Deserves Better, a political action committee (PAC) formed to oppose the Democratic presidential candidate. But Williams, a conservative talk radio host from California, was just getting warmed up.
"Barack Obama represents people who are ashamed of this great country, who believe that this great country is the evil in the world and that, in their revisionist history, they cast us as the villain," Williams claimed. "And if we dare question them ... like Joe the Plumber: 'Mr. Obama, what are you going to do to my taxes?' That was enough for the dogs who support the ideological left to go after Joe the Plumber and shred him. ... There's no such thing as sacred, among the unholy left. They vilify this nation, and they vilify those of us who support it. ... [It's] the same kind of thuggery of the left that's used by totalitarian regimes around the world to silence opposition."
Towards the end of the rally, Williams invoked a well-discredited [Oh really?] smear against Obama that seems designed to play on fears of his "otherness": that he's not really a U.S. citizen. "We all know that Barack Obama is not qualified to be president of the United States, beyond being above the age of 35 and probably an American citizen," said Williams, emphasizing the word "probably." He laughed and then repeated: "Probably. Even money."
Unlike his hypothetical conservatives cowed by leftist thugs, Williams will not be silenced.

I’m so glad someone has returned to Michigan to energize the McCain-Palin supporters there. I feel like that state REALLY needs the kind of attention and relief that the McCain-Palin ticket represents.

John McCain pulled his campaign out of Michigan in early October, but the California-based "Our Country Deserves Better" political action committee has continued to fight for the Republican presidential candidate here.
The committee, which the L.A. Times reports is run by Republican consultant Sal Russo and Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian, is running a series of attack ads in Michigan targeting Barack Obama and is funding the "Stop Obama" bus tour that is rolling across the state.

Times - Top of the Ticket blog, Oct. 27: Having raised $560,000 through mid-October, Republican consultant Sal Russo is buying airtime in Michigan for an ad that reminds viewers of Barack Obama's links to Weather Underground founder Bill Ayers, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and Kwame Kilpatrick, the disgraced former mayor of Detroit.

Joe Wierzbicki, a Brighton native, is coordinating the PAC's "Stop Obama" bus tour.
The Ann Arbor News, Oct. 26: Tour organizers came to Michigan because they believe the state is still in play in the election, Wierzbicki said. "When you consider poll numbers just two or three weeks ago, and historical election results, coupled with Michigan's one-state Depression - and so many Democratic office holders - shouldn't supporters of McCain come here and tie the state's dismal economy to the Democrats?"
The "Stop Obama" bus, with huge pictures of McCain and Palin on its sides, will swing through seven Michigan cities on its two-week cross-country trek through battleground and swing states.

Gov. Palin wanted to visit Michigan with Todd. Time is short but I think it may be worth 1/2 day campaign.

'Stop Obama Express' comes to Mid-Michigan

Supporters of John McCain gathered in Saginaw Township on Monday to welcome the “Stop Obama Express”.

The bus was full of high profile McCain supporters who have traveled through the state over a course of three days. National radio talk show host, Mark Williams, talked with supporters for a few minutes. They say their efforts have helped McCain climb in the Michigan polls over the last few days. “We’ve gained 8 points in Michigan over three days. We spent about half a million dollars in TV ads to support the tour. With Barack Obama not in Michigan, we are the guerilla operation that will turn the state to McCain Palin."

The “Stop Obama Express” then headed to Flint. The bus tour started several days ago in California, and headed to parts of Nevada as well.

One lady at one of the GOP centers where we held a rally works with the McCain campaign also.

I asked her to have the bring Sarah back to Michigan and she said she has requested them to do so several times.

Lets hope McCain puts some effort into MI, it could come over to his column. The conservatives in Michigan are energized to drag McCain “kicking and screaming” (a Deborah Johns quote) into the presidency.
