Police chief to join gun debate (Seattle's Chief - against guns - in NPR-sponsored NYC event)
The Seattle P.I. ^ | October 27, 2008 | SCOTT GUTIERREZ

Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske thinks having more guns in the community doesn't deter crime, and he plans to argue that Tuesday night in a New York City debate.

Kerlikowske will appear with leading researchers and advocates on both sides of the gun issue during the debate at Rockefeller University in New York City.

(edit)

"It's a little different forum for police chief to be in -- at Rockefeller University in New York City in an 'Oxford style' debate," Kerlikowske said from his hotel room.

"I think they just wanted a practitioner. I think they wanted a little more color added to it, a little more practical viewpoint."

(edit)

Kerlikowske said research is "clear" that the more guns in the community, the more that are in circulation for criminals to get their hands on.

"When there are more guns, there are more guns used in suicides, and more guns used in domestic violence. And where there are more guns in more homes, there are more accidental shootings, including shootings by children," he said.

(edit)

In 2004, Kerlikowske was one of several big-city police chiefs urging Congress to renew the federal assault weapons ban after it expired. At the state level, he joined Mayor Greg Nickels in urging lawmakers to require background checks on sales at private gun shows.

He's a POS.........

Indeed....Seattle has been subjected to a string of similar Chiefs of Police over the past decades.  It's not a state of affairs that we are 'required' to endure as a result of the Chief's position, however, as evidenced by Sheriff Reichert before he became a politician and even more so by the WONDERFUL Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

It's the Leftist 'culture' of Seattle that continually inflicts people like Kerlikowske upon us....if Seattle were to be more like Maricopa County in Arizona the people would rise up and riot if there was even a whisper of subjecting them to some idiot like Kerlikowske.

Kerlikowske is a political hack, always has been and always will be. I’ve got more respect for the $hit I scrape off my shoe than I’ll ever have for him.

And I AM a former LEO!

Gil is a major improvement over Norm Stamper, but that’s not saying much.

Agreed on all counts.  My father was a police officer, and it was due entirely to seeing his frustration, day after day, year after year, that was brought on by the Leftist "Don't touch the criminals" attitude here in Seattle that caused me to have absolutely zero interest in pursuing law enforcement as a career....I didn't want to subject myself to the sort of unhappiness with the job that I saw in him that was entirely unnecessary and completely counterproductive.  That sort of thing coupled with seeing the results of 'affirmative action' here, where GREAT officers simply got fed up after taking the Sergeant's exam three, four or five times and always getting passed over by a dramatically lower-scoring minority candidate caused me to avoid a law enforcement career like the plague.  That being said, you'll find no greater civilian supporter of the rank and file Officers than myself because I have a unique understanding of the incredible strength that they have to have in order to put up not only with the Seattle Police and City Administrations, but the  criminals as well.  It's a needlessly- terrible situation here, for all the wrong reasons, and we can thank the Left here in Seattle for the lion's share of it.

Sorry to rant, but I felt the need to give a BIG THANK YOU to all Seattle Officers who have to deal with all of this political garbage day in and day out yet keep coming to work and protecting the community.....they have more strength and dedication than most people realize.
