The furor over rejecting politically oriented speakers at the College of St. Catherine shows no signs of slowing down.
An online student petition denouncing the St. Paul school's decisions has collected more than 200 signatures as of midafternoon, an on-campus demonstration drew a couple of dozen participants today and school administrators met with students this afternoon.
The developments follow last week's news that the all-female Catholic school turned away visits by conservative commentator Bay Buchanan, a leading supporter of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The former First Lady is a campaign trail regular on behalf of Barack Obama, her party's nominee for the White House.
St. Kate's administrators said that the two speakers, as well as Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken of Minnesota, were denied speaking opportunities on campus this election season because the school was worried that it couldn't provide an equal amount of opportunity to both sides of the political spectrum.

For one thing, the goils need to be told that no Catholic can support a pro-abortion candidate if his opponent is not pro-abortion. Have they been told this? Am I hearing the sound of crickets?
They actually should cancel any political appearances until their diocesan bishop, the priests in their school, and the theoretically Catholic lay board can figure out whether they want to adhere to Our Lord or to the zeitgeist.
Amen...first things first!
Well said...
But is it the charter of any institute of higher learning to supress free speech?
This is a private Catholic college. Personally, I think they should all be out there demonstrating for McCain; while the GOP is not a reliable ally, at the moment, they are much closer to Catholics than the radical statist socialists in the Dem party. However, since the school’s either wussy or heretical clergy can’t make that decision, everybody should just go off and do their political stuff elsewhere.
AMEN!
Fixed it.
Yes...well...um..
I’m sure that Bay and Hillary would have preferred a large, public forum. I’m not sure that they would have showed for a meet and greet at Caribou Coffee..
The (civil) debate rolls on....
;-)
Its simple,The same 200 signaures should threaten to pull their kids out of the school. That hits them where it hurts. The pocketbook.
I really wasn’t looking at it as a Catholic thing or an abortion issue thing. I just thought that young people should be able to listen to opposing views and make decisions based on their beliefs....
But, indeed, if any school chooses to limit free speech...hit ‘em in the wallet.
I am Catholic. And it erks me to no end how they left is taking over the Church and its teachings.
“I am Catholic. And it erks me to no end how they left is taking over the Church and its teachings.”
I’m a Lutheran, and I feel the exact, same, way.
It is ending and Pope Benedict is seeing to it personally.
If a school is claiming to be Catholic then the invited speakers on campus should be in line with Catholic teaching. There is much healthy debate that can be had within the confines of Catholic doctrine and teaching.
I am so happy to hear that.I tell my friends to raise their children as Christians,it will piss off a liberal.
