WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) -- A Washington(D.C.) jury on Monday found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty of all seven corruption counts he was charged with over gifts he accepted from an oil industry contractor but failed to report.

Jurors said Stevens, who is running for a seventh term, deliberately failed to disclose on mandatory Senate financial disclosure forms more than $250,000 in home renovations and other gifts from the oil company VECO and its chief executive officer, Bill Allen.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for five hours Monday before returning the guilty verdicts.

Yet another reason for term limits. Good riddance.

You beat me to it.

Yup! I'd say.....about 6 terms in the House or 2 terms in the Senate....and then go back home and work for Burger King....or something. No retirement benefits either.

Twelve years max, (or sooner) ought to be enough time to really identify the crooks and turn "Em" out. We have effectively established an aristocracy in this country by allowing these morons to keep running for reelection....forever!

It may take a Constitutional Amendment though. Remember the idiot Republicans who had their chance in the House in 1994.....but thought "THEY" were too indispensable. We'll not ever again get a chance to do this by House or Senate vote.

I have no use for Stevens but I sure do have a question:

how is it that THIS particular trial was scheduled to conclude about 1 week before a national election, while all kinds of Demagogue scum constantly have investigations and/or prosecutions postponed b/c of course “we wouldn’t want to affect the elections in any way”??????

Why isn’t Wm. Jefferson on trial right now? Why aren’t all sorts of Democraps on trial right now? Seems just a bit one-sided in how the DOJ handles these things, eh?

Perhaps his buddy Colin Powell can visit him in prison.

I’m pretty sure he is going to a low security prison like the one Martha Stewart went to...

Republicans in Alaska are just like Democrats in New Orleans who nominate a man under indictment for Congress.

I think that Sarah can appoint a successor to fill his seat. I also think that the Alaska GOP could put up another candidate.

The newspaper declaring Obama the winner may end up correct with this.

It just depends upon how the McCain camp reacts.

It could turn into a nothing story like the Palin report. Or, it could dominate the news for the next week.

McCain has GOT to respond aggressively with an anti-corruption plan, a reinforcement of his economic plan, and also point out the redistribution of wealth comment OVER AND OVER again.

Stevens is corrupt. But this verdict will be over-turned on appeal because of prosecutorial misconduct.

Not IF a Laut type campaign begin with a real successor named.

But, it has to happen no later than tomorrow or it won’t work.

I agree. Term limits should be a given. It is really disgusting that people get to make a career out of it and then they have nothing left to do but turn corrupt.

Unfortunately, he needs to be re-elected next week. After he resigns, Sarah can appoint his replacement.

I have a rhetorical question which almost all Freepers will know the answer to, other than faux posters:

How is it that from the first hint of Stevens' impropriety, thru the Grand Jury, to the indicment, to the trial, to the verdict (at least)it appears that the entire process has been expidited in record time (yes in time for the Lame Stream Media and DemoRats to gloat and issue their "corrupt Republican" mantras") but after 2 years, the DOJ has yet to move on "Cold Cash" Jefferson?

I listened to a lot of 80s music in my youth, ha. I apparently didn’t read the album covers enough to have killed the spelling that bad.

stevens asked for an accellerated trial himself.

He wanted it over before the election.

He was indicted in July. Normally, that could mean the trial could possibly push to after the election.

According to adn.com, Stevens asked for a speedy trial, specifically one that would be concluded before November 4th so it would be out of the way before the election.

You can’t say you didn’t see this coming.

Once his "friends" turned on him and began spilling everything, it was over.

The thing that amazes me about Stevens, is he really thought nobody would notice any of this stuff. The arrogance is amazing.
