Obama Winning Over the Jewish Vote (Gallup: 75% of Jews for O)

PRINCETON, NJ -- Jewish voters nationwide have grown increasingly comfortable with voting for Barack Obama for president since the Illinois senator secured the Democratic nomination in June. They now favor Obama over John McCain by more than 3 to 1, 74% to 22%.

This is based on monthly averages of Gallup Poll Daily tracking results, including interviews with more than 500 Jewish registered voters each month.

Support for Obama among all registered voters was fairly stable from June through September, but then rose sharply in October -- in apparent reaction to the U.S. economic crisis. By contrast, support for Obama among Jewish voters has expanded more gradually, from the low 60% range in June and July to 66% in August, 69% in September, and 74% today.

The current proportion of U.S. Jews backing Obama is identical to the level of support the Democratic ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards received in the 2004 presidential election (74%). It is only slightly lower than what Al Gore and Joe Lieberman received in 2000 (80%) -- when the first Jewish American appeared on the presidential ticket of a major party.

Recent support for Obama is a bit higher among older Jews than among Jews younger than 55. According to combined Gallup Poll Daily tracking data from Sept. 1 through Oct. 21, an average of 74% of Jews aged 55 and older supported Obama for president across this period, compared with about two-thirds of younger Jews.

I've read your post four times now, and I still don't understand it.

Gallup, isn't just wrong, now they're an arm of the DNC? Isn't that a bit absurd? What evidence do you have to substantiate that claim?

"Isn’t Sarah Palin half-Jewish? Or is it 25 percent Jewish?"

As I understand it, she was born and baptized a Roman Catholic but raised as a Pentecostal Christian. I've don't think that there is a Jewish connection.

"How many Jews voted for Hitler? Are there any estimates?"

I think that Hitler was pretty outspoken against the Jews from the beginning, even before he became chancellor. He may have toned them down on occasion, but he never completely abandoned the antisemitic speeches which played upon all of the ugly sterotypes and fears that have been forever used to smear the Jews. If that was the case, I can't imagine that he had any following among the Jewish population

Pagan Jews, who’d have thought!
Christian love for Israel grows out of our love of the King of Jerusalem, to come. Our hope is there, not our present. The Jewish people have ripped God’s heart out before and are ripping it out now, same as all other pro-abortion nations. He won’t let it go on for much longer. I plan on doing a study on how He avenges the death of the innocent on a national level. Should be interesting.

I doubt the high percentage estimates. Those Jews that vote for the Obamanation have lost their grip on reality itself..

I see the same thing with Jewish friends I know. They were big Hillary supporters. They were willing to support McCain, because he is a “principled” man who stands up to James Dobson and Pat Robertson. They were hoping he would pick Lieberman or Giuliani or Christie Whitman as Veep. Since McCain picked Palin, my Jewish friends felt that McCain has caved in to the Religious Right and thus untrustworthy to be President. They consider Southern Baptists to be a bigger threat than Hamas.

My Orthodox Jewish cousins are conservative. Meanwhile, my two older sisters, uncle and aunt are not religious at all, and are voting for Obama.

I find this really interesting in that the older categories of Jews actually support Obama more than the younger ones. So much for the stereotype of the old Jews who won’t vote for an African-American with a Muslim-sounding name...

Btw, a site I’ve found that is conducting some very different polls is http://www.perspctv.com, which is showing a type of chart measured by the number of mentions each candidate gets in the blogosphere to indicate which is generating the most “buzz”. The comments can be negative or positive, but they still count towards that candidate’s overall reputation becoming more influential. Well worth checking out to get a sense of some of the finer nuances of this crazy election.
