ALBUQUERQUE, NM There's a topic that Sen; Barack Obama, D-Ill., and his campaign don't seem eager to discuss much, or at all, and it's one that Republicans are raising with increasing frequency in these final days: the notion of one-party rule returning to Washington DC.
"Senator Obama is measuring the drapes and planning with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid to raise taxes, increase spending and concede defeat in Iraq," McCain said. It's one of McCain's closing arguments, and it makes sense. As ABC News' Polling Director Gary Langer points out, many swing-voting independents don't like the idea of one party controlling the executive branch, as well as both houses of Congress.
Independents, by 43-34 percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll, say divided government is the better way to go.
You're going to hear this argument a lot this week; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., has even come up with a handy nickname for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and (in this construct) President Barack Obama: "RePO".

McCain needs to quit telling people why not to vote for Obama. He needs to tell people why they should vote for him.
This should’ve been part of it all along:
Obama-Reid-Pelosi.
Every other word.
Geesh... it's about time McCain brought this up! I've heard Sarah talk about this in a few of her speeches this weekend...
Yep.
One party wants to dominate every aspect of your lives. You should buy every gun that you had so casually put off buying before. An armed citizenry is a prepared one. Stand up. Man up. Resist. Fight. Never give up.
Well...now here we have ABC stating the real reason Obama may lose. They are totally setting up their poll to shift back to even or thereabout. One party rule. Yeah.. How about..Obama isnt qualified and Americans dont WANT him to be President. When he loses on Nov 4th Americans will speak out against Obama NOT one Party
New pitch! It common sense!
Number 2 has got that one right. Hoping for the wind blowing in the face of others is a lot less palatable than hoping for the wind against your own back.
Americans don’t like one-party rule. Mac needs to hit on this and at the same time talk about lower taxes and NO socialism.
Independents want checks and balances. Hit on this BIG TIME...
Yes and he should use Newt’s REPO term.
I’ve heard several people talk about this issue
Fear a Obama-Reid-Pelosi veto proof congress....Not good!
I agree. He should have looked right into the cameras at the last debate and said do you want a liberal super majority?
This is a VERY GOOD attack.
Geraldo siad its racist and Dick said how do you think Hillary almost won.
Just look at what one party rule on the Democratic side has seriously done to the entire state of Massachusetts for over fifty years and counting! The Massachusetts GOP has been a very weak shell of an entity for a very long time with no end in sight. It’s really very sad, and the national level could really also end up following the Massachusetts political situation for the long-term!
the other good thing about this pitch is that it does no harm to our Senate candidates; in fact, it bolsters their candidacy in every state.
McCain must hammer taxes - all taxes that BO has promised to raise.
More people think they’ll get a tax cut from BO than McCain!
And don’t forget to talk up the part about the most hated congress in history!
Newt’s ‘repo’ is a good nickname.
Frankly, with how poor a job the republicans did with one-party rule, divided govt. is the way to go. It keeps both sides pure to their perspectives instead of becoming corrupted.
Good point; McCain did lay out an economic plan, but he needs to just hammer that home this week.
