Hundreds of Mexican nationals who live in Oklahoma spent Saturday morning at Chelino’s restaurant in Bricktown, where the Mexican consulate from Little Rock, Ark., had set up a temporary office. Some were in line for passports, but most were requesting matriculas consulares, popular Mexican ID cards that are not legally recognized in Oklahoma under the state’s tough immigration law.

The 650 people who showed up represent a small portion of Oklahoma’s immigrants who need the consul’s documentation services.

Proving identity Andres Chao, Mexican consul in Little Rock, said many local Hispanic immigrants have trouble getting state-issued IDs, because they do not have their birth certificates or other documents. Matriculas, while not recognized as official IDs by the state, are useful for opening bank accounts and proving identity, he said.

Round them up.

Bus them over the border.

Give each one a bottle of water and dump them by the side of the road.

illegal alien labor:

- Immigrants send home on average $1,400 to $1,500 per year through money transfers (also called Remittances).

- As per the World Bank in 2002, people sent $133 billion worldwide. Developing countries accounted for $88 billion of that.

- Remittances from the United States to Mexico have tripled to $13 billion between 1995 and 2003.

- As per the Pew Hispanic Center, 39% of surveyed Latino immigrants listed themselves as having legal status to opening bank accounts. This enables cash transfers through private money centers such as Western Union and Money Gram.

- HOWEVER, banks including Citibank, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo Bank began accepting matriculas, which are photographed identity cards for Mexicans living in the US.

- Matriculas are obtainable by any legal or illegal Mexican. Matriculas are widely obtainable through Mexican consulates across the USA.

- To date, around 2.5 million matriculas have been issued, and the number is growing.

And getting ITINs (Individual Tax ID Numbers) and loans. You're absolutely right, Jeff, this is what got us into this mess in the first place.

"............this is what got us into this mess in the first place." Very few are willing to admit it - but you are SO right! I told my friend two years ago, "This is going to bankrupt the housing industry, and shut down our banking system as we know it, and destroy the economy of this country." I went to my bank, and closed my savings account with them. I told them that what they were doing by giving credit, loans and mortgages to illegals, was going to destroy our country - and I didn't want any part of it. I told many others, but no one listened.

Mexico should be free to offer any ID to it’s citizens that it wants as should any other country. The fault lies with institutions in the US that consider those IDs to be officially useful documents in the US or as a substitute for evidence of legal presence in the US.

The FBI testimony simply paints the Matricula for what it is: a worthless piece of paper that is the result of a con job.

The con is continued by negligent and gullible governments in the U.S. who then accept that document as having any kind of legitimacy.
