Diplomatic correspondent,

Syria has said American troops carried out a raid inside Syria along the Iraqi border, killing eight people - if the claims are true then this will be the first military incursion by the US into Syrian territory from Iraq.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem at the UN

Syria's foreign minister Walid al-Muallem met US officials at the UN

But its timing is curious, coming right at the end of the Bush administration's period of office and at a moment when many of America's European allies - like Britain and France - are trying to broaden their ties with Damascus.

Whatever the local military factors involved in this US operation, it would be unthinkable to imagine that an incursion into Syria would not require a policy decision at a high-level.

The movement of insurgents and foreign fighters from Syria into Iraq has long been a bone of contention between Damascus and Washington.

The US argument has always been that the Syrians are not doing enough to control the border. The Syrians have always countered that they are unfairly being blamed for turmoil inside Iraq that is not of their making.

Quite apart from their differences over Iraq, Washington sees Syria as unhelpful in Lebanon and as far too friendly with Iran.

RYMB - Who’s going to vote for 0bama if the conflict in the Middle East appears to be expanding?

IThis had to have the blessings of Bush...and I will wager that he was in touch with McCain and Obama...before this went down..

Understand this was never done during the height of the insurgency.

Bigger than people realize.

Israel will be the October surprise!!!

The undecideds and possible Obama supporters will realize they need a seasoned President with the military knowledge of the complete scene to carry out AND support Israel's preemptive attack on Iran. Israel is very, very nervous right now just 9 days before the election. An attack right now will result in a huge number of (learn while on the job training) Obama supporters voting for an (already learned) nominee like McCain. Of course Bush can do the job AFTER the election but, then, it will be too late if Obama gets it. After Obama is sworn in, he will immediately make nicey with the mullahs and donate zillions of our tax dollars to the poor suffering victims of our attacks to rebuild their nuke facilities.

In other words, we rumble with Israel BEFORE the election and get McCain elected rather than AFTER the election if Hussein (Heaven forbid) became our next President.

And the reason was the wedding party was too loud. Isn’t that the only people we bomb in the middle east, wedding parties?

“this will be the first military incursion by the US into Syrian territory from Iraq.”

Another lie by the BBC. Our troops “incurred” into Syria early in the war. This is not the first time.

For a 'Diplomatic correspondent' this guy has a woefully weak understanding of diplomacy.

"many of America's European allies - like Britain and France - are trying to broaden their ties with Damascus. "

Now they'll find Syria more eager- well gosh, it must be a coincidence!

Well, well. If it was helicopters instead of UAV’s somebody wanted a close look at something. Or needed to bring something back. Just a thought.

More than likely just chasing terrs.
There is not much of a demarcated border out in the desert and there are less Iraqi safe havens left so, chasing terrs or shutting down arms smuglers.

These days, we have so many eagle-eyed buzzards swarming up there with high-def (probably 1080p) that make all the 'players' as clear as footbal players on ESPN. They can see the wiskers on the mutt's faces and perhaps recognize eveery one and what they were up to long before they actually raided. Besides, who knows that there were no Iraqis with them on this operation? They are turning more and more over to them.

With the reports of success (naming names) in Pakistan and Afghanistan and elsewhere of other high-level terrorist mutts being sent to Allah's paradise...make me believe that they knew these guys and what they were up to...

Our forces havve improved and the Iraqis seem to be coming onboard. They know that if Obmama wins that he could un-do all the sacrifice and gain in Iraq. He could surrender and wipe out the dream. Perhaps, Gen. Odierno knows this and is getting business done before that might happen.

I am not certain that this is going to be a clincher for McCain. The Sheeple might see this as another reason to get a President who will stop expansion of the War.

Sadly, I must agree.

Our Kumbayah society thinks we can “just sit down and talk and peace will happen”. Like there has ever been peace in any time? Even in the animal world, the biggest wolf wins.

As a test case, I think they should all sit down with an intruder to their home. And ask for meaningful dialogue before the intruder kills them. See how that works.

Why?

Because we needed to bag some bad guys who happened to be hiding out there.

Not complicated.

I wonder if this is the “start” of the event that Mr. Biden was ranting about a while back?
