he prospect that Barack Obama is primed to be the nation's first black president has black voters giddy.
But the better the news gets for Mr. Obama, with bigger leads in polls the closer Election Day draws, the more they fear it's too good to be true. It's especially so in the South, where a history of oppression, voter suppression and near electoral victories make blacks more skeptical than most.
"Every day I watch the polls and get excited because I know Barack Obama is going to win the whole thing," said Corgins Banner, a 32-year-old Charlotte man who works for a bank. "Then it hits me. Something is going to happen. They are going to find a way to stop him."
The long-running campaign has taken its emotional toll on some blacks who are jubilant one moment and fearful the next, and the mixed feelings were evident in interviews conducted last week.
Many simply don't believe white voters are telling pollsters the truth about whom they'll back, though recent elections involving high-profile black candidates, including Mr. Obama's own primaries this year, suggest polls are fairly accurate. Some voters also suspect something more sinister malfeasance in the counting of votes come Election Day.
"Racism is still alive and well in this country," said Washington-based Democratic consultant Ray Strother, who contends that polls don't reflect some white voters' reluctance to back a black candidate. "There will be people who go into the voting booth intending to vote for Obama but won't be able to do it."
The uneasiness hasn't shaken black voters' resolve. Their backing was crucial to him winning several early primaries, and a strong black turnout is expected to boost Mr. Obama in battleground states, including North Carolina.

They prize race above all else it seems.
Whites worry too. We all do.
It seems to me that some Black voters would vote for Charles Manson if he was Black.
Don’t worry. The wackiest pollsters will rally their base by having McCain narrow on Obama big time to scare the black voters to the booth.
Evidently blacks do not believe in or agree with MLK’s ‘I Have a dream’ speech. He wanted his children to be judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
and some people will vote for a Communist if he is a Democrat
They worried that 95% of whites are going to vote for the white guy? Whatever made them think that.
I think the answer is all of them would. This reminds me again of the Howard Stern interviews in Harlem. What makes me even more angry is the fact that BO is not really a black, when I was a kid the term was mulatto...what happened to it? His mother was fair skinned and definitely a caucasian.
and blacks ignore the fact that MLK was a Republican
It is strange that so many black people will, without a second thought, vote for the political arm of the KKK.
And they have fallen for the dim spin that the dims ‘really, really care’ about them.
I wouldn’t mind voting for a black man for President if he had the proper qualifications (which would be the same as for a white man, by the way...).
But, it would definitely seem that many of the black people in this country will basically vote on color (which is truly racism) rather than on the basis of qualifications (which is partly [probably] how Hillary got bumped off...)...
No doubt: OJ revealed how deep black black is.

______________
Yes, racism is alive today: 93% of blacks are voting for Obama.
As if we are going to fall for this pap ever again.
After seeing what their black churches are really like, all that “preaching” racism against whites, its evident that the lectures on bigotry and racism were only for whitey.
It's over, no more sniveling about what victims you are, I say take your slander and shove it.
If Obama loses, blacks will riot and loot.
If Obama wins, blacks will riot and loot.
For a black person getting excited over a black candidate simply for the fact that he is black would be as stupid as any other race or ethnicity getting excited over a member of their own race or ethnicity becoming president without regard to what that person is going to do with his said power. Am I going to vote for Barney Frank just because he is white? What problem is Obama being half black going to solve in and of itself? Never have I seen a bigger group of easily conned suckers in my whole life.
I guess because they’re uneasy and unsure about the situation, well...that means we owe it to them to just GIVE it to them, huh...
