President Bush sends request to check against ballot fraud to Justice Department

WASHINGTON -- The flap over Ohio voter registrations stepped up a notch Friday, with President Bush forwarding a GOP leader's requst for help to the Justice Department.

U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner, of West Chester, asked the White House to direct Attorney General Michael Mukasey to get involved after Boehner got no response from an earlier request he and other Ohio members of Congress sent to Mukasey. With less than two weeks until Election Day, Boehner said he felt he needed to go directly to the president.

So he sent Bush a letter Friday saying that unless the Justice Department takes action immediately, "thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands, of names whose information has not been verified . . . will remain on voter rolls during the Nov. 4, 2008, election." Bush in turn sent the letter to Mukasey.

The White House characterized Bush's action as routine, and it is not clear whether Justice will get involved. But U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown was among those saying they were "disappointed that the president chose to interject partisan politics into the election."

Boehner's complaint refers to the roughly 200,000 Ohio voter registrations that do not match other records containing residents' identities, such as drivers' licenses. Democrats and voting rights groups say that all but a tiny fraction of the mismatches are typos or similar errors. And Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says that an excessive focus on voters whose mismatches can be easily explained is unnecessary and could even disenfranchise some legitimate voters.

But the Ohio Republican Party and Boehner say they worry about potential fraud, especially in light of false voter registrations turned in by some workers for ACORN. They want Brunner's office to direct checks of the 200,000 registrations against a database with driver's license and other information.

Brunner and the Ohio Republican Party disagree as to whether the Help America Vote Act of 2002 requires her office to conduct such checks. The U.S. Supreme Court last week dismissed a suit that sought to force Brunner to conduct the checks.

It's a long shot that anything will come of this but at least they're making an attempt.

The Justice Dept. will drag it's feet until after the election, if then, and then rule against the what's right as usual. Ahh, poor, poor Brown whining like a selfish little two year old and wanting everything to be about MEEEEE!

Partisan my a$$. Somebody on the Republican side has to stand up to these thugs and stand up hard. The RAT's are now using downright subversive tactic's to gain control of our government and very little is being done about it.

As a matter of fact, it looks like their game plan assumes the Pub's will not stand up to them or take the flak in the media when accused of being partisan or trying to influence the election.

The “New Tone” is what has enabled the rise of the Left in this country. It is the biggest misjudgment of the GWB presidency.

this is the issue that the manufactured scandal of the firing of the nine US attorneys is all about, right? The Democrats and the media have been ramrodding this for years. I remember when Dornan brought his voter fraud complaints about Sanchez to the House floor in (?)’95. I watched on C-Span as the Republicans eloquently defended the sanctity of the vote in a democracy, and practically fell off my chair when the bozo argument “racism” was all the Democrats could reply. Headline in the Washington Post the next day? Something like “Racism Major Factor in Dornan Complaint.” The Republicans backed right off.

The Republicans always have the added burden in an argument of not wanting to rip the country apart, the Democrats don’t seem to care about it ( They’re the ones willing to lose a war to win an election for instance). And I certainly prefer to think of Sarah Palin without those items.

Abraham Lincoln tore the country apart in order to SAVE it! Time for the latter day Republicans to step up to the plate.

If Justice doesn't get involved, then we might as well eliminate the agency. We could save millions and millions of taxpayer dollars by not supporting an agency that merely keeps lawyers employed with absolutly no purpose other than to collect a paycheck.

The American people are clearly getting fed up with a federal government that doesn't bother to enforce laws. If we're going to have anarchy anyway, let's save some money.

Bush has been alone in Washington, without Republican support ever since his pools tanked after Katrina, the Republicans ran for the hills. Look where they are now.

The supreme court merely said that some official body should have brought the suit, instead of the republican party of Ohio. Get any country election commissioner to refile the same suit, and the supremes have to hear it.

Oh for the love of GOD!!!
The "RISE OF THE LEFT" did not suddenly occur in the past 7.5 years! The "RISE OF THE LEFT" have been systematically marching for 100 years. Their greatest achievements began around 1968 and have made enormous progress every year since then.

But hey, it is all BUSH'S FAULT with some.
FR is being relegated to the pits of the KOS kids and DUmmies. What a pathetic waste!
