Back when I lived in San Francisco, in a nice residential neighborhood in Oceanside, the pot dealer one flight up and the hooker across the hall were always within reach (not that I was reaching that way). Those activities were illegal, but that does not mean they were not there.
The law of unintended consequences will make them rue the day they passed this.
You already mentioned the increased cost of VD treatment.
The way this law is worded, it creates a huge loophole for all kinds of activity. It doesn’t legalize prostitiution, it makes it illegal for the police to pursue a crime that involves prostitiution. You know the way the courts are in SF that they will give it the most inclusive interpretation possible.
Public sex (of any kind)? If it is for money the police’s hands are tied.
Public nudity? I’m a prostitute advertising.
Loitering? I’m a prostitute looking for work.
Accosting people on the street? I’m a prostitute looking for work.
What makes them think this will be confined to the “adult” sections of town. The richer customers will be staying in the better hotels, they’ll go where the money is.
How will this affect SF’s tourist/convention business? Businesses that are planning conventions will think twice about holding in a town where female conventioneers might feel sexually harassed by public prostitition (in other words, why not hold the convention in San Diego and avoid the problem all together.)
I really don’t think they realize the pandora’s box they are opening (or maybe they don’t care.)
.....if San Francisco is spending $11,000,000 a year on enforcement of prostitution laws....
They would be well off by just doing nothing. By calling off the vice efforts they would make money or have funds for other effort like bathhouse cameras.
“CNN: Legalized Prostitution Could Help San Fran Economy”
Just CNN staffers looking for a job that will help them get back their self respect.
A conservative would have to be elected by the f-ing nutcases of calif. Ain’t gonna happen.
Calif has been going to hell in a hand basket for years. Why change things now?
Not much a step to take from legalizing it in the socialist paradise to requiring those without to get work in the oldest profession.
Decent people shouldn't live in San Francisco. They'd be happier some other place.
Actually, I believe that it was actually "the feds" that were running it, and the brothel was the famous "Mustang Ranch."
And yes, the government run brothel actually lost money. Only the government could lose money on one of the most profitable businesses in history.

So they turn a blind eye to the crime of prostitution but you watch how they deal with the crime of tax evasion. You betcha they’re willing to draw a line there and throw the book at someone!
Well it will cause the doctors to stay busy with STD patients, that is for sure!
Oh yes.
Legalize mafia hits, and we could tax that income.
Legalize kidnapping, and we could get a percentage of the ransom.
Legalize shoplifting and bank robberies, and we could get a piece of that pie, too.
Of course we all know how much money we’d make if drugs were legal and we got our percentage on all those sales.
Why, we’d be richer than Solomon.
Or worse, they still will vigorously check for and enforce the most hideous crime of all-->Someone caught smoking in a bar
GREAT! Send Pelosi HOME. Since she’s been screwing the entire country while in Washington, she can hit the ground running in her new position out there.
If you have ever walked down Polk Street in SF gay prostitution is already there.
One thing San Francisco may do is the way they do it in Nevada: strictly controlled brothels at designated locations where every prostitute is stringently medically checked.
re: “boost the economy”
There are all kinds of jokes that can be made but I’m trying not to go there.....
I’ll just say that Eliot Spitzfong should be recruited to make some special TV ads for the San Francisco tourist life.....
Great, maybe my daughter can get a part-time job to help with college. It will happen to some of us.
>If you have ever walked down Polk Street in SF gay prostitution is already there.
I didn’t know that. But then again, if you’re looking for perversion there, I’m sure you could find it.
